Margaret Smith has a dubious distinction- the first fugitive ever profiled on AMW's first ever episode on Lifetime. Unfortunately, unlike AMW's other debuts (David James Roberts in the first ever episode, and Alan Eugene White in the 1996 post-first cancellation), Smith is still on the run as of this posting date. (although in fairness, she was aired as an 8-second commercial break on Fox in 2009, so at least it's not like she was entirely new). In any case, the following is the AMW archive description of her case:
Cops: Man Beaten Beyond Recognition
Margaret Lorrain Smith and her husband, George Smith, were well-known in the beach community of Surfside, Texas. They were business partners in a popular shore-front burger joint, and were active in the city council.
On the surface they appeared to be your average, fun-loving couple, but cops say there was another love in Margaret Smith’s life: money.
According to police, George Smith had huge amounts of money tied up in real estate, and that Margaret would do anything to get her hands on it.
So, they say, Smith withdrew thousands of dollars from a bank account and hired Dylan James Laughrey to kill her husband of nearly 28 years.
They say the veteran’s badly beaten body was found on the beach in 2007, his facial bones shattered into more than 100 pieces.
Laughrey has already been sentenced and is behind bars, but cops believe Smith apparently couldn’t stand the idea of being locked up.
Authorities say Smith was out on $125,000 bail, and was being monitored by a probation officer and ankle bracelet. But when Smith’s name was called at her August 2009 trial, no one came forward.
Now cops need your help in tracking down this murder-for-hire suspect who needs to be held accountable for her crimes.
Cops: Smith Asks Daughter To Wire Money
Police say Smith had an appointment at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston on August 10, 2009.
They say Smith convinced her daughter that she had gotten lost in Houston and needed $200 wired to her there.
Authorities say Smith didn’t use that money to hop on a bus back home. In fact, cops say there is no record of her being treated or admitted to the VA hospital. They do say, however, that cameras caught her carrying packed duffel bags out of the building.
Cops think Smith might have hopped on a bus toward the Mexican border. They say she also has contacts in Asherton, Texas.
Smith's Bail Raised To $1 Million
Police describe Smith as 5’6” tall and weighing around 140 lbs. She has a darker complexion with brown eyes and brown hair -- but they think she could have dyed it blonde.
They also tell AMW she drinks alcohol and smokes cigarettes.
Authorities say Smith’s bail has been raised to $1 million in light of her no-show court date in August 2009.
Thoughts? I don't know about you guys, but I'm sick and tired of this alleged evil *expletive* being on the run. Even more so since she's Lifetime's debut fugitive and AMW so far can't get their first like their two debuts on Fox.
My best guess is she's in Mexico seeing it's close proximity to Texas and the fact she really doesn't seem that hard to spot, suggesting she's in another country.
I also feel since it's really hard based on odds for AMW to strike lightning three times in a row, I do see Smith going down one day, but as an indirect capture. Hopefully justice will be served one day though.
UPDATE: As of July 22nd, 2018, Smith, who was also aired on "The Hunt with John Walsh" in 2015, is still listed on the U.S. Marshals website as one of their most wanted fugitives out of the Southern District of Texas: www.usmarshals.gov/district/tx-s/fugitives/index.html
