Cops: Int'l Predator Fades Into The Shadows
Detective Adam Romine has spent the better part of ten years chasing down bad guys, but no one ranks as high on his list of "off-the-charts" bad guys than Gregory Robert Whitehead.
In October 2007, cops say Whitehead invited two young girls to his Colorado Springs, Colo. home. According to investigators, Whitehead told the girls they could earn some money in exchange for completing some basic household chores for him.
Excited about the opportunity to work for the man who was once their parents' landlord, they felt comfortable.
But cops say it was all a ruse.
No sooner had the girls arrived than cops say Whitehead was making another "proposal." They say Whitehead offered the girls money in exchange for sexual favors and sexually explicit photographs of themselves.
Trapped inside the home, the girls felt they had no other choice but to submit to Whitehead's demands.
But cops say the experience was too much for them to endure. Tortured by the memories and fluctuating between pain and fear, the two young girls gathered the courage to call police.
Cops wasted no time in investigating the girls' claims. They issued and executed search warrants for Whitehead's home.
When cops arrived, Whitehead appeared shocked. But investigators say he exercised his right to remain silent.
Whitehead was escorted to jail and charged with Sexual Exploitation of Children and Soliciting for Child Prostitution. He was later released on bail.
But what cops didn't know was that Whitehead had his own plans. When he failed to attend a court hearing on the case in January 2008, officials immediately issued a warrant for his arrest, quickly followed by a federal arrest warrant for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution.
Cops say an investigation later revealed that between the time of his arrest and his court date in January 2008, Whitehead began liquidating assets. Cops say Whitehead was able to abscond with several hundred thousand dollars.
Cops: Whitehead May Have Abused Children Overseas
Investigators say Gregory Robert Whitehead appeared to be the very picture of success.
As a successful insurance executive, he could afford expensive international vacations when he wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the working world.
And Whitehead was easy on the eyes, despite losing his once full-head of brown hair, Whitehead had piercing blue eyes and a well-trained physique. But it was his understated mode of dress -- blue jeans and a T-shirt -- contrasted against his luxury cars -- that made him appear even more attractive to the opposite sex.
And cops say renting expensive sailboats, having a pilot's license and driving flashy sports cars only seemed to cement his image as a playboy.
But detectives say one had only to scratch the finely-polished veneer of the man to discover the monster lurking just below the surface.
Detectives say an investigation into Whitehead's life did just that; it revealed that those expensive and flashy international treks were actually voyages to nations that have fallen prey to the child sex tourism trade.
Authorities believe that in addition to the young girls he lured into his Colorado Springs home, Whitehead may have sexually assaulted children outside of the United States.
Clues to Help Find Alleged Child Predator
Whitehead is described as a white male, standing 6'2" tall and weighing about 200 lbs. He has brown hair and blue eyes.
Cops say Whitehead likes to party and likes to brag about his sexual exploits with prostitutes. He used to own a construction business and last worked as an insurance agent.
Whitehead has a pilot's license and is experienced in open water sailing. Cops believe he could be flying cargo planes or working as a sailing guide for tourists.
Cops say Whitehead is fluent in Spanish and may have fled to a Spanish speaking country like Mexico.
Investigators say Whitehead has connections to the San Diego, Calif. area and could have traveled out of the country to places where the child sex trade thrives; namely, Thailand, the Philippines, Central or South America.
For Det. Romine, tracking and capturing a guy like Whitehead is something he must do. "He is arrogant enough to think that he is going to get away with this stuff," he says. "And I'd like to show him differently."
Thoughts? The above was an AMW archive description of the case. I could have sworn he was aired on tv but he's listed on AMW as a web-exclusive. It sort of surprises me considering the severity of this case. What really interests me is one article interviews a bondsman who claimed to know where Whitehead was back in 2008 and that he fled the country but that bond agencies don't have the authority to bring fugitives back once they go overseas. However, he says he shared the information with the courts. Which has me asking if that's the case and the article is from SIX YEARS AGO , why is it 2014 and there's still an active warrant for Whitehead?
The other problem is even if he is overseas, he can be in multiple places making it harder to catch where he is.
