Gerardo Castro, accused of killing his wife of 25 years, was a web-exclusive case on AMW's old website. Below is the archive description of the case:
A Woman's Dreams Cut Short
Rosalinda Coronel‘s dream of opening her own beauty salon had finally come true. In September 2009, the energetic 44-year-old opened Encanto Salon in Salinas, Calif. Cutting and coloring hair was a passion for Rosalinda, so she and her friend Maria had saved money for years to afford the rent on their new business.
The salon was a promising new beginning for Rosalinda, who was going through a difficult divorce from her husband, Gerardo Castro, after enduring years of physical and mental abuse. While Rosalinda’s life seemed to be blossoming -- Gerardo was finding it very difficult to move on.
According to the couple’s daughter, Fabiola Coronel, Castro refused to accept the separation. He frequently showed up at his wife's home and harassed her. Shortly after the couple first separated in 2007, Rosalinda got a restraining order against him. She told her children she feared for her life after Castro had said, “If I can’t have you -- then nobody can.”
On Sept.29, 2009, cops say Gerardo violated the terms of his restraining order after following Rosalinda around town and confronting her outside her job. He was arrested and put in jail but was bailed out the following day by his brother.
Just five days later, on Oct. 5, Gerardo’s anger exploded, and police say he went after his wife again. According to police, Castro broke into her house through a window, stabbed Rosalinda multiple times with a blunt object and left her to die on the living room floor.
Detective Terry Kaiser at the Monterey Sheriff’s Department says Castro fled to Mexico the day after the murder. On Oct. 7, 2009, surveillance cameras in San Ysidro, Calif., caught the suspect withdrawing a large amount of cash from his bank account. Police recovered his abandoned vehicle at the U.S./Mexico border.
Fabiola and Junior Coronel, the couple’s adult children, have been left behind to grieve for their mother. Despite the difficulty of grasping that their father may be the killer, both children are determined that their dad should face justice.
“We want him to come back and face the law and face his kids. He took our mom, our children’s grandmother -- he was so selfish” said Fabiola.
A Violent History
When Gerardo and Rosalinda emigrated from Mexico to Los Lomas, Calif., in 1985 they had very little. The couple settled in the Salinas area of northern California, and Rosalinda became pregnant with their first child. They both went work in the fields of local farm: Rosalinda picked raspberries, and Gerardo drove a tractor.
Their daughter, Fabiola, says she was in the sixth grade the first time she remembers her father beating her mom. Over the years, Castro went to jail several times for domestic assault. Each time he got out -- Rosalinda would take him back.
Fabiola said her mother’s success at work caused frequent arguments between her parents.
“My father would yell at her and say she would be nothing if he hadn’t brought her here from Mexico,” Fabiola said.
As a popular employee at Vision Farms, Rosalinda quickly moved from picking fruit to supervisor in charge of more than 50 people. Those who knew Rosalinda say she was a vivacious and hard-working.
Salvador Vasquez, Rosalinda’s boss at Vision Farms recalls, “She was a fabulous employee, she was motivated and wanted to succeed, I trusted her a lot.”
Fabiola and Junior often found themselves caught in the middle of the arguments between their parents. When Rosalinda's son Junior was grown, he once stepped in to defend his mom when Gerardo hit her. From that time on, there was tension in the relationship between Junior and his dad. Junior became his mother's protector.
Fabiola had many long conversations with her dad, trying to help him move on with his life. At times, when Gerardo had a clear head he agreed with his daughter -- it was time for him to move on and leave their mother alone.
Fabiola said these conversations were usually in vain, because no sooner did her father say he was going to move on – and then he would show up at Rosalinda's house and threaten her.
Fabiola and Junior are not only grieving the painful loss of their mother, but their father as well.
Gerardo Castro turned 50 in 2009. He has black hair and brown eyes. He stands 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He often wears a mustache, which doesn't fully grow on the right side because of a scar. He frequently wears Levi's 501 jeans and is known for drinking Coca-Cola and beer.
Gerardo has family across Mexico, and he may be staying in the town of San Jose de la Pena in the state of Guanajuato.
Thoughts? I think it's a safe bet Castro's likely still in Mexico somewhere.

UPDATE: I have not been able to find any new articles online the past few years. As far as I can tell, Castro is still at large as of this update (7/22/2018), since I haven't found anything online suggesting otherwise. However, if anyone has any updates/proof-of-updates one way or the other, they are always more than welcome to let us know.
