Cops: Argument Over Cell Phone Turns Deadly
Beautiful. Gracious. Happy.
These are just a few words friends have used to describe Maria Alcantar.
Maria was a hard-working mother who friends say would give the shirt off her back to help someone in need. She worked at Central High School in San Angelo, Texas where she did janitorial work.
A teacher at the school became friends with Maria, who always greeted her with a hello and a smile.
But in early April 2009, Maria stopped smiling.
“Generally a warm and happy person, Maria became withdrawn and stopped talking to those of us who worked here in the building,” remarked the school teacher.
“She began wearing turtleneck sweaters with long sleeves, even as the weather began to warm. She spoke only when spoken to, and made sure she cleaned our classrooms after we had left for the evening.”
Maria left the school after her shift on the evening on April 8, 2009 -- but never returned.
And cops say it’s because she was brutally murdered by Francisco Zertuche.
Authorities: Fugitive Last Seen Headed Into Mexico
Police say Zertuche -- Maria’s live-in boyfriend -- accused her of losing his cell phone and completely snapped.
They say Maria called her daughter around 2 a.m. on April 9, 2009, saying they were in the middle of another argument.
Cops say Maria told her daughter, “If something happens to me, you’ll know who it is.”
They say Maria’s daughter then told her to “make him leave” and could hear Zertuche in the background say, “If she makes me leave, it will be forever.”
Authorities say Zertuche wasn’t lying -- and hasn’t been seen since.
Police say video cameras captured Zertuche crossing the border into Mexico through the Del Rio, Texas entry point.
They say he was driving a 1998 Red Dodge Neon with Texas license plate 024LCZ. Cops say Zertuche then dumped the car in Ciudad Acuña in Mexico.
Police: Zertuche Often Brags About Military Training
Cops say just four days after Zertuche allegedly shot Maria Alcantar in the head with a .22 caliber handgun, he called a friend in San Angelo saying Maria’s death was a “terrible accident” and was casually asking how things were going.
They say Zertuche said he was “down south” and to “tell everybody hello” before hanging up the phone.
Now, authorities need the public’s help in tracking down this alleged cold-blooded killer before this ticking time bomb explodes yet again.
Police say Zertuche is fluent in English, but usually keeps to himself. They say he has a controlling and jealous personality, and could be active in a local church.
Cops tell AMW that Zertuche has been known to boast about his military training and claims to have been on special detail for the late Mexican President Jose Portillo. They also say he could be doing oil field-related work and has contacts in Mexico, as well as Chicago, Ill.
Thoughts? The above was the AMW archived description for this case. Zertuche was profiled as a web-exclusive fugitive on AMW's old website. The wanted poster I posted above is from this year, which is pretty good confirmation that Zertuche is still wanted. The poster comes from a site called Crime Stoppers International, indicating to me there still seems to be a strong belief that Zertuche is in Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America.
