Can imagine a homeless transient lifestyle for this guy.
Long hair, unwashed body, and roaming around in search of his next drug fix.

Very true, the question is can he still be alive if that's been his lifestyle since 1983?

If he is alive, he probably aged badly advanced of his years (white hair, sun-tanned skin)

Has law enforcement checked if someone looking like Joe Edwards in the states of Michigan, Florida and North Dakota but living under a false alias?

I honestly think Edwards has been dead for a long-time. Through incredible police work, the IL State Police were able to find his biological mother and obtain her DNA profile (all they need is the profile of one parent). This was done in 2016, and the plan was to compare the DNA to inmates across the country for any matches. Nothing as of early 2018. I think the only time they'll get a DNA match at this point is if it's to an unidentified body. If he was going to use heroin constantly, he wasn't going to last very long.

I also think considering how much success AMW had catching fugitives in its' early days (they seemed to catch everyone before the advent of more cable channels and expansion of the internet), is another reason to think he's dead, as Edwards seems to have too many things and quirks about him to make him stand out for him to have not been a direct capture.
Also, entirely off-topic, but the "screw Lifetime" comments were made before I found out it was really Fox's license fees that was at fault for the show's ultimate cancellation.

I think there’s a 50/50 chance that he’s alive and dead. If he’s still alive he likely aged a ton that he looks completely unrecognizable and would look like someone who is 75 instead of his current age of 53.

Here's an interesting article on the case. I have always wondered since watching the AMW segment (or what there was to it) why would Edwards kill his adoptive parents since he had only been with them for three years and haven't contacted them for two years prior to the murders? Essentially what was his real motive? To be honest because of this I have suspicions that Joe may not be our guy and that Marcia may have mistaken the killer for Joe. Joe from the only pic we have of him was a common look in the late 70s and early 80s. But does give insight on possible motives. He was sent to rehab a couple of times but never stayed. Police also looked into a possible connection to him dabbling in satanism. Keep in mind as well that Edwards was also suicidal. So regardless if he's the guy or not, knowing about his fate is slim. On a aside here's on FBI poster on Edwards. www.pjstar.com/x1288989484/Luciano-Mother-s-DNA-could-find-parents-killer

This past Jan 20 unfortunately marks the 40th anniversary of the murders of Marcia and Robert Edwards as well as the manhunt of Joe Sinnott Edwards. I'm still have suspicion that Marcia may have mistaken Joe for someone else and Joe may not be our guy since the motive just doesn't completely add up. However, I came across a 1998 segment of Joe in which AMW noted he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, thus adding a new dimension to the case and Joe's fate. It also notes, since this was from an episode celebrating AMW's 10th anniversary, that Joe's case was first featured on AMW in Oct 1989. This could've been a mistake on AMw's part since sources like IMDB put his first appearance as Oct 1988. Here's a facebook post from a cold case group briefing the case. www.facebook.com/Projectcoldcase/posts/joe-sinnott-edwards-is-charged-with-the-murders-of-his-adoptive-parents-in-livin/1149309518602182/

Update: PONTIAC — The Livingston County Sheriff's Office was called to East Timber Street on Monday for a possible lead on a decades-old double homicide case that has gone cold, authorities said. Deputies were joined by the Illinois State Police to conduct a follow-up investigation into the murders of Robert and Marcia Edwards in January 1983, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. A University of Illinois team also was on the scene to conduct a scan using ground-penetrating radar technology. This was performed based off of information from past investigative interviews with the intent of being as thorough as possible, the release said. The results of the radar scans will take time to process before being sent back to the sheriff's office, according to the release. However, authorities do not anticipate the scan to reveal any new evidence. Police have long suspected that the Edwards' adoptive son, Joe Sinnot Edwards, committed the crime. Authorities also have said he may have been working with an accomplice, citing a message that was believed to have been written by Marcia Edwards before her death. A wanted posted for Edwards remains on the sheriff's office's website and offers a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. The poster says that it is highly likely Edwards has been arrested and incarcerated under an assumed identity since the murders. pantagraph.com/news/local/livingston-county-deputies-follow-up-on-40-year-old-double-homicide/article_7c063b36-03e6-11ee-bd09-cbd6fe27e67e.html
