Jean-Marie Jean Francois was John Walsh's #4 Most Wanted fugitive of 2005. The following is an AMW.COM archived profile description of the case:
Man Allegedly Included Voodoo in Murder Plot
Investigators say Jean-Marie Jean-Francois moved to the United States from Haiti in search of a better life. And at first, he found one. Shortly after making his home in Pompano Beach, Florida he attended a church and settled into a home with his girlfriend and her child.
He frequented a Bible study class and became friendly with a local pastor. But police say Jean-Francois' dark side quickly surfaced in the Sunshine State and that his good guy act began to unravel.
It turns out that his alleged dark side came from an interest in voodoo. But he didn't just have an interest in the practice -- police say he also had a hand written book of prayers and spells.
And police say inflicting pain was something Jean-Francois' was very familiar with. That's because his girlfriend had alleged he abused her. Not only that, she also had said that he threatened her with a gun. So to keep him away, she sought and received a temporary restraining order against him from a judge in Broward County, Florida. But that only made things worse.
Search Underway for Jean-Francois
Police say the restraining order pushed Jean-Francois over the edge and that from that point on, his girlfriend Fritz-Anna became the focus of a murderous plan.
Then, on Nov. 6, 2003, cops say Jean-Francois carried out his plan. While Fritz-Anna was in bed, Jean-Francois carefully waited for her to get up. When she did, cops say he entered her apartment, ambushed her and beat her to death. Then, he allegedly waited for Fritz-Anna's daughter to get home. Cops say he taped her hands, legs and mouth and threatened to kill her.
Fearing he hadn't left the apartment, the child was so terrified, police say she didn't move for 20 straight hours. Finally, police came to the child's rescue.
But cops say Jean-Francois wasn't done causing torment and anguish just yet. After searching the house, police say they realized something else was missing -- Jean-Francois' 4-year-old daughter -- Medjie.
Cops immediately issued an AMBER Alert. A day later, the pastor at Jean-Francois' church responded to the emergency warning. The pastor told police that a few days earlier, Jean-Francois had left the child with him, saying that he was going to go on vacaction.
The little girl is in safe hands but now police are trying to round-up the final person in this case -- Jean-Marie Jean-Francois. Police say he's a good planner and has probably plotted his getaway very carefully, but someone, somewhere has to know something.
Cops think he might be hiding out in a Haitian community -- possibly in south Florida. And there's another clue -- Jean-Francois speaks fluent French. That's why police say he may have also escaped to Canada. But he may have done more than cross the border. Police say it's possible he could be living in a completely different country such as his native Haiti.
Thoughts? Francois could have fled to Haiti like Esnel Jean. Haiti also had a devastating Earthquake back in 2010 (that even AMW covered) and although this may seem like an out-there theory, part of me wonders if he or even Esnel Jean could have perished there during it (somewhat off-topic but if anyone wants to discuss Esnel Jean himself, he's in the cold case section). Still, it seems unfortunately Francois will not be caught anytime soon even if he is still in Haiti. From what I Googled it seems there is an extradition treaty with the U.S. and I have no idea if it's put to use or not, but AMW has never caught anyone there. Our best bet is if he stayed and/or went back to the states and or is in a more "touristy" part of the Caribbean IMO.
