Glen Holmes Jr. was John Walsh's #10 most wanted fugitive of 2009. He was aired many times throughout the last few years of America's Most Wanted's run. Below is the archive description of his case:
Cops: Innocent Man Carjacked, Murdered At Taco Stand
On May 1, 2006, in Conroe, Texas, cops say Glen Holmes Jr. and several friends stopped at a gas station because their car broke down. But when the guys couldn't get their broken down Cadillac to turn over, cops say Holmes started scoping out cars that would be worthy of stealing.
When Thomas and his girlfriend pulled into the neighboring Taco Cabana at approximately 1:40 a.m. in a Cadillac, Holmes seized the moment. Police say Holmes rushed the Cadillac and ordered Thomas out of the car, threatening to shoot him.
Thomas' girlfriend said she pleaded with Holmes not to shoot them. Both victims fled the car, as demanded. Bystanders witnessed the attack and reported hearing several shots fired at Thomas as he fled the assault.
Before leaving the scene in the stolen Cadillac, cops say Holmes stopped at the drive-through window. Taco Cabana employees said he held them at gunpoint and demanded two tacos before fleeing the scene.
During the attack, Thomas and his girlfriend ran in separate directions. When the authorities arrived, Police couldn't find Thomas anywhere.
With the help of witnesses, officers discovered Thomas in an alley nearby. According to Conroe Police Officer Chris Tusi, Thomas was on the ground, bleeding and did not appear to be breathing. He died in the alley.
Upon closer inspection, officers discovered a gunshot wound on the right side of the victim's ribcage.
High-Speed Chase Leads To Smashed Caddie
While police officers and EMS personnel rushed to the scene of the crime, several other officers searched the area for a suspicious gray Cadillac. Around 1:45 a.m., an officer reported seeing a gray Cadillac in the area of South Frazier and began to pursue the vehicle.
Shortly after the officer started his pursuit, the driver of the Cadillac accelerated and attempted to evade the police, according to authorities. The driver turned off his lights and pulled off onto a shoulder. The officer trailing the Cadillac reported seeing the assailant leaning towards the center of the car, as if reaching for a weapon.
Then, police say, the assailant took off at high speeds down a one-way road. The Cadillac sped through a construction zone, before losing traction and bombarding into a concrete barrier. Holmes could not recover control of the car, and police say he crashed into a nearby ditch.
Despite the car crash, the perpetrator took off into a heavily-wooded area and eventually escaped authorities.
Holmes Arrested -- Twice -- But Remains On The Lam
Since the murder, police have arrested Holmes twice. The first time came shortly after the crime on May 18, 2006.
After initial hearings, a Texas judge set Holmes' bail at $100,000 but eventually reduced the bail to $50,000. Holmes posted bond and was released Aug. 7, 2006.
After bailing out, Holmes was not seen until 2007, when police arrested him for the second time.
Upon his second scheduled hearing, Holmes' bail was set at $75,000, which he posted once again.
According to police, Holmes has not been seen since posting bond and did not appear for his second court date to face capital murder charges.
Police have searched high and low for Holmes and continue to do so. Detectives have chased down leads from Holmes' hometown of Conroe, Texas, to his more recently rumored place of refuge, New Orleans, with no avail.
Despite an influx of tips and a dedicated team focused on chasing down promising leads, police have not yet pinpointed Holmes' location. Investigators need your help to get Holmes behind bars -- once and for all.
Thoughts? This is a case that REALLY pissed me off when I saw it on AMW. I say it all the time, there is never a murder that is "necessary" but I hate ones like this that never had to come to this. Holmes had already carjacked Thomas. Thomas complied and gave him the car when the gun was pointed. What was the need for allegedly shooting him afterwards as well?
And the alleged robbing a taco place afterwards was bizarre and callous at the same time.
This is obviously a guy that is dangerous and based on what police say has no regard for human life. Not to mention, quite frankly, I am shocked he hasn't been caught yet. He seemed like he'd be one of the easier top tenners to catch for 2009.
