The Pulaski County Major Crime Task Force believes it has a murder on its hands.
However, a body of the alleged victim has not been located and the task force has yet to track down the suspect in the case.
An arrest warrant was issued yesterday for Mariano Garcia Aguilar, a.k.a. Aguilar Mariana Garcia and Jose Guerra, 34. He will be charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence.
According to Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Brett Whitaker, the task force believes Aguilar killed Irene Gutierrez, 43, of White House, Tenn., last Wednesday at a Grundy Road residence.
“Task Force detectives have been in contact with (Gutierrez’) family in Tennessee and no one has seen or heard from her over the past several days,” Whitaker said. “Evidence uncovered in this investigation suggests that Gutierrez was fatally wounded in this assault, although her body has not been found.”
The task force got involved last Wednesday night when the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Depart-ment received information from a potential witness that an assault had occurred earlier in the day at a residence at 4931 Grundy Road in Somerset. Acting on that report, sheriff’s units went to the home and discovered evidence that an assault had taken place.
“The major crimes task force was activated, and a thorough search of the residence resulted in the recovery of evidence that suggested a serious assault had in fact occurred,” Whitaker said. “However, there was neither a victim nor a suspect in the home at the time of the search.”
Whitaker said the investigation revealed that at least two Hispanic males and one Hispanic female visited the home last Wednesday.
“Sometime during that visit an altercation took place between one of the Hispanic males (Aguilar) and the Hispanic female (Gutierrez),” Whitaker said. “During that fight, the female was reportedly shot and then removed from the scene.”
The task force believes Garcia fled in a 1999 Chrysler, which was located on Sunday evening abandoned in Aiken County, S.C., by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Department. Task force detectives traveled to South Carolina to assist in the investigation and returned the vehicle to Pulaski County on Tuesday.
Whitaker said a search of the car uncovered evidence that confirms Gutierrez was placed in the trunk of the car.
“It is rare to have a murder investigation without the body of the victim,” Whitaker said. “But we have enough evidence from the scene and from the vehicle that leads us to believe (Gutierrez) was murdered.
“We do not know Aguilar’s location and we encourage the public to call with any information they may have,” Whitaker said. “Information may be given anonymously to the task force by calling (606) 678-5145.
Whitaker said earlier this week that Aguilar is a migrant farm worker with ties to the farming community in northern Pulaski and southern Lincoln and Rockcastle counties.
“We believe he may have had some family in South Carolina, although I do not know where in South Carolina,” Whitaker said Monday.
Aguilar, who listed Somerset Village as his last known address, is approximately 5-foot-10 and weighs 180 pounds. The suspect has a large scar on one of his forearms.
The investigation is continuing by the Pulaski County Major Crimes Task Force consisting of detectives with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Depart-ment, the Somerset Police Department and the Kentucky State Police.

Thoughts? Please note that the above article is from 2007 so some details may have changed since then. For example, I have no idea if Irene Gutierrez's body was ever found. I'm assuming Aguilar is still at large since the online Kentucky court records still lists this as an active case but if anyone finds otherwise or has any updates please feel free to let us know.
