To Scumhunter: What AMW cases out of the New York City region did you take the most personally, or were the most interesting to you?

To Scumhunter: Andre Neverson was 2nd only to Michael Blane Brashar on my 20 Most Wanted Fugitives of '002. Am I the only one who ranked Neverson that high on their Most Wanted of '002? I know John Walsh put him towards the top of his Most Wanted of '006, but I think only I put Neverson at #2 in '002

The most interesting case I ever covered was probably the first-degree murder trial I just wrapped a couple weeks ago. The crime itself happened on Mother's Day 2011; a 19-year-old was shot in the neck at a bonfire party around 4 a.m. He was taken to the hospital then flown to another one, where they determined they couldn't remove the bullet without killing him (the bullet also severed his spine and paralyzed him from the shoulders down). He spent some time in rehab centers before moving to Florida with his mom, where he died from his injuries about eight months later. Once he died, investigators were able to remove the bullet and it matched a gun that had been recovered the day of the shooting from a house just a block away. Soon a witness came forward and gave the name of someone who had confessed the crime to him, and soon DNA evidence linked the suspect the the murder (his skin cells were found on the scope of the rifle). In July 2012, the suspect was arrested and charged with murder, and two weeks ago, after a weeklong trial, he was convicted of first-degree murder. Turns out the teen who was shot was an innocent victim; the shooter was a gang member who was shooting at the party because rival gang members were there and he didn't like that. So he just shot into the party, not knowing or caring who he hit.

Most bizarre...that's a tough one, because there have been a lot of weird crimes that I've covered. If I had to pick though, I'd go with the one I covered three years ago about the woman who was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of her neighbor. In December 2001, she shot and killed him and said he was committing a home invasion robbery with another man (who was never identified). But one of the investigators on the case thought something was bizarre; minor details weren't adding up, and her story was always slightly different. Nearly a decade later, the woman was arrested and charged with murder; it turns out that she had made up the whole story about the home invasion. She actually lured the neighbor to her house and made it look like a home invasion. The motive? At the time of the shooting she was involved in a bitter child custody dispute with her ex-husband; she made up all these lies about him, including saying he molested their son (police investigated and said the allegations were false). So she concocted this elaborate plan and then went to police and said she thought they should investigate her ex-husband for possibly putting a hit out on her. And that's just the tip of the iceberg; I haven't even told you about the part about how when she was arrested she had three passports with phony names on them and had extorted a dentist in Chicago that she was having an affair with. "Dateline" and "Snapped" have both done episodes about her.
