(note: Gary LaTray was a web-exclusive case on amw.com. He was direct capture #1105)
Gary LaTray’s rap sheet, a criminal record that dates back 25 years and includes a $2.9 million armored car depot heist, grew a little bit longer Monday.
The Syracuse man admitted robbing two banks, one in Hamburg, the other in Virginia, as part of a five-year old robbery spree that took him to at least three states and landed him on the America’s Most Wanted television show.
Now 55, LaTray appeared in Buffalo federal court and pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated bank robbery, the latest in a series of convictions dating back decades.
It was in 1989 that LaTray and an accomplice stole $2.9 million from an armored car depot in DeWitt, outside Syracuse.
LaTray, who attributes his life of crime to drug and alcohol addiction, served more than 17 years for the robbery and after his release returned to Syracuse to help counsel drug addicts.
He dropped out of sight in 2009 and, according to police, went on a robbery spree that included a shoe store in Maryland and sent him to state prison there.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John M. Alsup said LaTray also robbed the Northwest Savings Bank, 3670 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg on Nov. 30, 2009, and a Sun Trust Bank in Harrisonburg, Va. that same year.
LaTray will face up to 96 months in prison when he is sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
Kimberly A. Schechter, an assistant federal public defender, said LaTray’s guilty plea ends the various state and federal prosecutions of her client.
