RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Fla. (WSVN) -- Miami-Dade Police are searching for a man, who they believe, is responsible for the murder of a 7-year-old boy in Southwest Miami-Dade.
Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Dravein Duke, also known as "Pop," who is wanted in connection to the second-degree murder of Amiere Castro.
The 7-year-old boy was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting.
According to Miami-Dade Police, the shooting took place near Southwest 152nd Street and Jackson Street, Sunday at around 3:30 p.m. Investigators said someone from inside a white, newer model Dodge Ram pickup truck with tinted windows opened fire into a house, striking the 7-year-old victim.
Officials believe three other people were in the pickup truck at the time of the shooting.
"Our little brother had just walked by and a bullet hit my little cousin in the head," said Kerria Gibson, the child's cousin.
Police said the child, who did not reside at the home where the shooting took place, died at the scene.
Gibson described her cousin as having an infectious, radiant personality. "He was playful, happy. He wasn't disobedient, he would listen," she said. "He was happy to be 7 years old."
Grief-stricken relatives said they are living a nightmare, and area residents said they were shocked by the gunfire. "It's just crazy. That's all I can say," said Teroy Swain, who heard the gunshots.
"He shared his toys. He gave my son a toy because my son started crying, said the victim's uncle, Elijah Tobler. "He was a good kid. He was a good kid."
Police said the subjects' actions had devastating consequences. "These individuals that are arming themselves need to think twice about what they do, 'cause they just took the life of a 7-year-old, and all bets are off when that happens," said Miami-Dade Police Acting Director Juan Perez.
Alberto M. Carvalho, the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, expressed his disbelief on Monday evening, police located the truck near the scene of the shooting and towed it away for processing. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
If you have any information on this man, or the three other suspects, please contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a $3,000 reward.
Thoughts? I wish I could say I was shocked by this- but sadly we've seen this too many times to be. Saddened, of course, but unfortunately not surprised. Hopefully Duke is a quick capture.
It should also be noted initial articles said police were searching for four shooters and a getaway driver was captured. I'm still unclear on if there are any other known fugitives in this case, but rest assured if I learn that I will post their picutre as well.
