Cops: Student Gunned Down By Gang Members
When cops asked the students at McClatchy High School in Sacramento, Calif. what the school day was like on Sept. 30, 2003, many of the kids said that there was supposed to be a fight that day. Word had spread all over campus about two rival gangs itching for a fight. However, the brawl never happened, and that's when cops say things escalated.
When the fight didn't go down, Rickie Che, Bobby Chiu and another member of the Hop Sing gang stayed close to the school, looking for trouble.
Roberto Treadway, 15, was walking with some friends as school let out and noticed a girlfriend of his was being harassed by Che and his crew. Roberto stepped in and tried to break it up but the die had been cast -- both groups began fighting as dozens of high school students walked home from school.
Two Down, One To Go
Witnesses say that the Che and his fellow Hop Sing members weren't happy with how the fight was going, so one of them went to a nearby car and grabbed a gun. Cops say Che took aim and shot Roberto in the head. He died at the scene.
The Hop Sing gangsters fled the scene and made their way to a safe house. Authorities say the Hop Sing network was sophisticated enough to offer Che and his pals the opportunity to get out of state with new identities.
Chiu and another suspect were arrested, but Rickie Che is still at large. Cops say he goes by the nickname "Tiger" and likes playing video games in internet cafes. If you've seen him, call our Hotline at 1-800-CRIME-TV. You can remain anonymous.
Thoughts? Che was only a web-exclusive I think but correct me if I'm wrong. This case seems to have gone cold. What I found recently was a few appeals from Bobby Chiu of his murder conviction, his argument being Che as the shooter and not him. But of course in the commission of a crime if one person is killed, all are often punished no matter the trigger man. I assume Chiu is still in prison since he is still listed in California's inmate database. But Che is nowhere to be found. Over a decade is long enough. Let's bring him to justice.
