Lately I've been setting my DVR to record some Dateline episodes, with the main focus being on cases that were featured on AMW. So far I've seen episodes on the West Mesa Serial Killer, the unsolved murder of Paula Sladewski, and the capture of Joaquin "Chapo" Guzman. The capture of Chapo was particularly interesting since they interviewed the (now-former) undercover team leader who helped track him down. I don't know how well-known this fact is but Chapo's downfall came after they tracked down his courier and used that courier to get to him. Strangely, that's also how Osama bin Laden ended up getting located.
It was nice to see a full episode dedicated to the West Mesa case, too. AMW kind of did this but when I eventually get to the 2009 guide (which will probably be about 2025 at the rate I'm going) you'll see it's not exactly what it seemed. Dateline actually mentioned that investigators were looking into the possibility that Leah Peebles' disappearance was linked to the West Mesa case, but couldn't find anything to prove it.
Any other Dateline fans on here?

I'm not as well versed on TV crime documentaries concerning the past as I am with John Walsh's fugitive manhunt shows concerning the present. I've been struggling for years to identify what genre Dateline is. Speaking of the AMW Episode Guide, any progress on the next wave of '005 broadcasts?

And Dateline also had a special on the manhunt for Jason Brown as well. And I believe Dateline also did a story on Kyron Horman. Dateline and 20/20 and somewhat 48 Hours (to an extent) are weird in that they use to be more like 60 Minutes or general human interest newsmagazine shows. It wasn't until the late 90's that they went from general human interest to more true crime. Most of the cases they cover are true crime cases that have already been solved but as Pakman points out there are some exceptions.

I've been struggling for years to identify what genre Dateline is. Speaking of the AMW Episode Guide, any progress on the next wave of '005 broadcasts? It's basically a news magazine type show. One of the cases I covered in Iowa was actually featured on there (the case of Tracey Richter - she's also been on Snapped. I know half the people they interviewed for her story). I'm going to keep working on the AMW Guide this week.
