Partners In Business, Partners In Crime
In Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Christopher David Meer and his father, Jonathan David Meer, worked together as business partners. From the outside looking in, the two appeared to be running a successful and legitimate business.
According to authorities, this was hardly the case.
Canadian investigators say the Meers owed substantial amounts of money to workers and partners and had no intention of settling their differences. These debts accumulated and the situation worsened for the Meer’s.
By January 15, 2007, a complainant issued a $1,200,000 judgment against Jonathan Meer through the Province of Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench. But Edmonton police say neither Christopher nor Jonathan Meer had any intention of paying up. In fact, cops say the Meers would do just about everything in their power to avoid giving what they owed.
Hot Headed Family Fires The Competition
On March 25, just months after the judgment against the Meer’s, havoc struck at the vacation home of a complainant in Mulhurst Bay, Alberta. Cops say two unidentified individuals threw a Molotov cocktail at the house.
Fire engulfed the house almost immediately, putting the complainant’s family in grave danger. Despite the roaring house fire, the entire family managed to make it out of the house alive. However, cops say the family’s beloved pet burned alive. When the fire finally settled, all that remained of the $1,200,000 vacation home were the remnants of the house’s concrete foundation. Moreover, the fire spread to the neighboring property causing another $500,000 in damage.
Investigators quickly discovered the identity of the two unknown arsonists due to a suspicious vehicle report. Detectives soon learned the suspicious vehicle was registered to a company owned by the Meer’s. Cops say a series of investigative steps lead to the identification of the two individuals—one of whom was Christopher Meer.
After The Smoke Clears, Meer Disappears
In the months to follow, the Meer’s were scheduled to appear time after time in civil court. Nevertheless, after each court date, cops say threats were issued to all those whom stood up against the Meers.
Cops say the intimidating behavior didn’t stop. When a Canadian court issued a court appointed receiver to reallocate the Meer’s assets in order to settle the million dollar lawsuit, cops say the Meer’s got back to their heated ways.
Early in November, days after the court appointed a receiver, cops say someone threw a Molotov cocktail at his house. A neighbor saw the blaze and prevented it from spreading. The damages amounted to around $50,000. Later that same evening, someone targeted the lawyer who worked for the complainant and shot out the windows of his home.
Cops say this frightening behavior didn’t stop. After every court appearance, a terrible act of endangering vandalism followed. On December 20, the complainant and his sister were at home, when cops say someone broke out a window and yelled, “You should have taken the deal.” Detectives believe this comment was in reference to the settlement proposed by the Meers.
After breaking the window and yelling at the complainant, the culprit threw a Molotov cocktail through the broken window and set the house ablaze. The house rapidly ignited and burned to the ground. All the occupants made it out alive, however police say the complainant suffered from burns and cuts on his legs and feet. The estimated damage amounted to $875,000.
Detectives soon discovered Christopher Meer played a major role organizing the attack.
As December came to an end and the new year began, threats continued to pour in, constantly jeopardizing the safety of the complainant. Edmonton Police Services did everything in their power to protect the victims from any further violence.
In April of 2008, the Edmonton Police Department gathered enough evidence to criminally charge the Meers. Police took Jonathan Meer into custody, but Christopher Meer headed for the border and slipped out of reach before police could apprehend him.
Christopher Meer has managed to successfully elude authorities since his disappearance. But now that he is in the states, this Canadian fugitive shouldn’t be too hard to identify. He is a rumored ladies man and likes to hit evening hot spots, such as night clubs and lounges. Furthermore, Christopher Meer has a distinct Canadian accent and should be fairly noticeable.
Once crossing the Canadian border, Meer headed to Arizona. He has friends and family in San Antonio, TX, although detectives believe there’s a chance he fled to Mexico. If you’ve seen this hothead, call our hotline right away.
Thoughts? LOL at the last line in the AMW archive. Meer was aired on January 16th, 2010 on AMW. I realize this is the second Canadian fugitive in a row I've added this week, but it's just the way the schedule of adding short profile fugitives has worked out. I think he's still in the states. He'd stand out in Mexico, and not to mention if this guy is still trying to be a ladies man, while there's plenty of bars in Mexico, I think the states is more suited for this particular fugitive.
