Hit-And-Run Devastates California Family
At about 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 28, 2006, Joseph Drake was driving his pick-up truck home to Glendora, Calif., from a friend's house in Pasadena. Police say his wife, Patricia, was seated in the front passenger seat, and five other friends and family members -- including their 17-year-old son Sean -- filled the vehicle. Joseph, a former minister, told West Covina Police there suddenly was a sound like a bomb going off. Since that moment, their lives have never been the same.
Investigators say that a red Corvette speeding along at more than 100 mph smashed into the back of the Drake family's truck and flipped it upside-down. Sean was covered from head-to-toe with blood but was able to walk. One passenger was in a state of shock, screaming, "We're all dead, we're dead!"
Joseph was pinned underneath the dashboard, and he says he remembers telling his wife that he thought he was losing his leg. In that same moment, he noticed that Patricia's arm was barely attached to her body. Joseph says that witnesses to the crash pulled over to help and paramedics arrived. Joseph pleaded with them that they save his wife's arm and not worry about his leg.
In the end, his leg and Patricia's arm would to be amputated.
Authorities say when police found the Corvette's wreckage on the other side of the freeway, there were no signs of the driver. Witnesses claim they saw two men leaving the vehicle, disappearing up the ramp on foot.
West Covina cops received a call about five hours following the accident from a seemingly-frantic man, claiming that he had been partying at a nightclub and that his keys were stolen at gunpoint. Police tell AMW the man, 29-year-old Jesus De La Herran, told them that the carjacker took his brand-new red Corvette.
Cops: Hit-And-Run Suspect Had 7 DUIs
Following the emergency phone call, police say they met up with De La Herran at a local McDonald's restaurant to take his statement regarding the theft. They say that the story wasn't adding up, and it seemed like the intoxicated man was lying.
Their suspicions were confirmed when they asked the man to lift his shirt, which revealed fresh contusions across his chest that would correlate to the driver's side seatbelt in an automobile accident. Later that evening, De La Herran was booked for hit-and-run, perjury, and drunk-driving causing bodily injury. They say it was his seventh DUI arrest.
Following the tragedy, Joseph and Patricia found some solace that justice would be served. De La Herran was out on bail, and police say he showed up for all of his court appearances until his criminal trial. Cops believe three days prior to the hearing, he cashed out his bank accounts, liquidated some assets, transferred property holdings over to family members and vanished. Police say the suspect is likely to be living a lavish life on the run
The Drakes say not an hour goes by that they don't think about how Jesus De La Herran destroyed their lives. Since the crime occurred, they’ve faced four home evictions and are accountable for $7 million in medical bills. They say the greatest hardship is learning to live a normal life with missing limbs, and the public ridicule of their disabilities runs a close second. They say they continue to pay for the price for his crime on a daily basis and have been steadfastly determined to make him pay his dues as well.
On Jan. 20, 2011, the investigators trying to track down De La Herran notified AMW that tragedy struck the Drakes once again. That morning, a Dodge Dakota driven by Patricia John swerved off of a highway in Phoenix, Ariz., and flipped over a number of times. The force of impact ejected Patricia from her pickup truck and she died at the scene. She was 42 years old.
Cops: Flashy, Arrogant Fugitive Could Be In U.S., Mexico
Jesus De La Herran has been known to be a sharp dresser and is flashy in all aspects of life. He loves fast-moving sports cars -- especially Corvettes, he's been arrested for driving under the influence more than half-a-dozen times.
The San Bernardino District Attorney’s office and AMW urge you to come forward with any information you might have pertaining to Jesus De La Herran's whereabouts. Authorities say it is possible that he is living in California, Las Vegas or possibly even Mexico. If you know anything, please call our Hotline.
Thoughts? De La Herran was aired three times between 2010-2011 on AMW and became one of the most emotional cases in the later years of the show's existence. I always wanted to add the case but I couldn't find a picture in the AMW.com archive. Ironically after Pakman found me one, all of a sudden I did. But I still thank him and put him to work on something else.
Also, I wanted to address one thing about Patricia. Although no one's said it, I take it some people may say it was not a smart idea for her to be driving considering one of her arms had to be amputated. But that, in my opinion, is blaming the victim. Not doing normal every day things she would have done if healthy would have been letting De La Herran win.
De La Herran, at around 35 years old, in my opinion, is an overgrown Chris Ponce. He forever changed the lives of two people, causing one's arm and one's leg to be amputated. While likely not legally he is probably technically responsible for one of their deaths and is alleged to be living a lavish lifestyle which is sickening and infuriating. I never get these guys who kill and/or injure people when drunk and can't man up and admit they made a mistake. If you don't want to face the consequences, you should have thought about that before you went on the road drunk out of your mind.
As for De La Herran himself, he appeared to be involved in real estate, which unfortunately gives him a lot of great opportunities to hide. I'm sure even Mexico has real estate opportunities as well.
But wherever he is, what De La Herran really should do is turn himself in. And if he can, bring Chris Ponce and every other drunk driver on AMW/The Hunt with him.
