From CBS Crimesider:
BARDSTOWN, Ky. - This week marks six months since a mother and her teenage daughter were murdered in their Kentucky home and still, police are no closer to solving the case than they were on day one.
Kathy Netherland, a 48-year-old elementary school teacher, and her 16-year-old daughter Samantha were found slain in their Botland home on April 22. Investigators say the two were killed around 8 p.m. the night before. They haven't released a cause of death.
Kentucky State Police Trooper Jeff Gregory told 48 Hours' Crimesider Thursday that authorities haven't identified any suspects or persons of interest in the case. He says no one has been ruled out.
"We have lots of avenues that we're still looking at. Determining a motive in the case is a problem. It's hammering the investigation," he says.
However, Gregory notes that "based on the evidence and the investigation, it doesn't appear that they were randomly targeted."
Shortly after the murders, authorities released surveillance video of a black Chevy Impala they believe the person responsible for the murders was driving.
"We still believe if we can find that car, we can solve the case," Gregory says.
A $2,500 reward is being offered to anyone who has information leading to an arrest. Tips can be made to the Kentucky State Police at (270)766-5078.
Thoughts? Just one more note- CBS Crimesider said the cause of death was not released, but according to another news article, Kathy was shot multiple times, and Samantha had been beaten in the head. Both had wounds to the neck. Neighbors interviewed in one article think it had to be random because the two women had no enemies, but the causes of death sound rather personal to me.
This is a tough case, when I take a look at the pictures of Kathy and Samantha, they both seemed like very sweet women. It's hard to look at those two and wonder who would want to hurt them. I look at those smiles and then think about the way they died and life just seems unfair.
This double homicide is all the more tragic since the reason Kathy was a single mother was her husband (and Samantha's father) had died a year earlier due to cancer.
Kathy Nederland was a school teacher. So right now one guess of mine is if it was a student or former student who didn't like her for whatever reason. It would be incredibly petty but we've all seen on this forum people kill other people for the stupidest reasons.
I would also wonder since Samantha was a young and attractive woman if there may have been a stalker either secretly or openly obsessed with her that could have committed this crime.
But those are only two guesses. Obviously, we like to sleuth on this site, but I'm the first to admit we're not actual detectives (which is not meant to offend anybody as we can see some of our guesses have been spot on with some resolved cases). But I still feel helps to get it out in the open and discuss what could have led to this tragedy, and see if we can help develop any decent theories in any way. Who knows what could have happened. All I know is this sweet mother and daughter who seemed beloved by their entire community need and deserve justice.
