Gilberto Juarez-Hernandez was an AMW web-exclusive case in the winter of 2012, and likely would have been aired on the show had it not been cancelled by Lifetime. The following is a news article description of his terrible alleged crime:
The little guy would be heading to middle school now, with his proud mother at his side. But they were brutally murdered in a case that haunts detectives.
Friday marks 10 years since Petra Martin and her 2-year-old son, Uriel, were stabbed to death in what police call a horrific crime. Her infant daughter was spared.
Back in October a suspect was finally named, but no one can find him.
Described as nice, honest, and hard working, Petra Martin took loving care of her 2-year-old son Uriel. As a toddler, Uriel was already a cancer survivor who had just finished a round of chemotherapy.
But on July 19, 2003, they were stabbed in what police say looked like a planned attack in their home in the 400 block of S. San Remo Avenue, between Cleveland and Court Streets.
Clearwater Police detectives spent several years sending away the same key piece of evidence for analysis: a bloody fingerprint found at the murder scene. Finally, last year, it came back with a match.
A judge issued two first-degree murder warrants for Gilberto Juarez-Hernandez. Police don't know what the motive or connection is between the victims and Juarez-Hernandez.
Juarez-Hernandez is 33 years old now.
According to records from a 1999 arrest in Iowa, he's described as 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 150 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Police say he has scars on his back, left hand, and one of his left fingers.
Detectives think he may be in Tampa Bay or in the Des Moines, Iowa area, where he has two brothers and several friends.
Thoughts? If AMW wasn't cancelled, not only would case have aired, but there is a strong possibility he would have been #1 on our yearly top 10 list (or even John Walsh's if he had brought his yearly tradition back).
What makes this case even more baffling is there is no motive yet seems like a planned attack. Who would plan to kill not just a mother but a 2 year-old son? But DNA doesn't lie, and it came back to Gilberto Juarez-Hernandez.
Although Juarez-Hernandez's last known address was in Iowa, I think it is possible he fled to Mexico once it was released in the media that he is the man believed responsible by police.
Little Uriel survived cancer only to be violently stabbed to death by this alleged monster. And his mother who I'm sure must have been ecstatic to see him survive didn't deserve this either.
