John Langley, the creator of Cops, the controversial reality show and former AMW lead-in on Saturday nights on Fox, has passed away at age 78. Somewhat fittingly, he died of a heart attack after a car race. Obviously he has a conflicting legacy and I am conflicted about the show as well. To be honest I never really cared for Cops and only watched as a way to bide my time/background noise while waiting for AMW to come on. And in retrospect, the show did help reinforce negative racial stereotypes. With that being said, it was enjoyable and amusing at times and I loved the episode where John Walsh rode along with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department (where they also had the most incredible coincidental capture of all-time, who would have thought a fugitive would cook John Walsh dinner!) With that also being said, the man has passed away and thus I will payy proper respects and say may he rest in peace. www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/john-langley-dead/2021/06/29/13dcc112-d81c-11eb-bb9e-70fda8c37057_story.html%3foutputType=amp

To be honest I never really cared for Cops and only watched as a way to bide my time/background noise while waiting for AMW to come on. These are my thoughts on the show too. But as you said, some of the segments were very entertaining. Once they arrested this VERY drunk driver in Atlanta. First she tried saying she wasn't drunk and that all she had was a Snickers bar, then kept trying to make up an excuse involving her husband or boyfriend who was Jewish, had a busted spleen, was on community service and was either half-dead or fully dead (she wasn't making a lot of sense; I'm still trying to figure out what him being Jewish had to do with her being drunk).
That said, this is still very sad. A mixed legacy for sure, but John Langley did give people an inside look at what law enforcement dealt with day-to-day. Also, the Jacksonville ride-along wasn't the only time AMW and COPS crossed paths. In 1989, a COPS crew in Portland happened to be riding along with the officers who responded to a triple shooting (eventually a triple murder) at an apartment complex. The suspect, Alvaro "Chito" Alvarado, is still at large to this very day. The last words of Alvarado's cousin, Otto Alvarado, were actually caught on tape by the COPS crew (the detective was questioning him about the shooting and Otto was able to identify Alvarado as the shooter before he died).

Have to agree with others that COPS is a mixed bag. It did show the crap LEO have to deal with day in and day out and made it more understandable how tough the job is. In the same breath(and this was something John Walsh wrote about in one of his books) it also brought a lot of negative stuff to the table. It made minimum effort to hide the faces of domestic violence victims, even when there were children involved, pushed racial stereotypes and IMO used dubious methods to get people to "consent" to their arrests etc. being aired. Also, as one man who had been on the show as a young drug addict but was now clean and sober years later stated, it's tough to see the lowest moment in your life being shown for entertainment over and over again years later when you aren't that person anymore. At the end of the day, COPS has a very mixed legacy. As to John Langley, may he RIP.
