Police on the ground and in the air spent more than an hour Tuesday scouring an area of Reading for the suspect in the deadly stabbing of a 15-year-old boy. City officers and state troopers surrounded a wooded area near North 6th and Spring streets in search of Jose Espinoza-Diaz after they received reports of him being in the area again. A state police helicopter helped in the search from the air, while police dogs worked the ground. In the end, the intense manhunt turned up nothing. Espinoza-Diaz, 39, of Reading, approached a group of teens at Church and Douglass streets last Friday evening and stabbed Wilberto Rojas in the neck, police said. Rojas, 15, died of the injury as paramedics were transporting him to the trauma center at Reading Hospital, police said. A witness to the stabbing chased Espinoza-Diaz on foot, but he eventually lost sight of the suspect in the 500 block of Windsor Street, according to court documents. A short time later, police said they found Espinoza-Diaz lying in a grassy area south of the Price Rite store on Railroad Road, but he was not taken into custody. The witness who gave chase subsequently identified Espinoza-Diaz as the man who stabbed Rojas, according to court documents. An officer returned Sunday evening to the area where Espinoza-Diaz was found and, within what would have been the suspect's arm's reach, located a folding knife beneath the thick grass. Espinoza-Diaz is described as a Hispanic man with black hair and brown eyes who stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. Investigators have still not identified a motive for the homicide, despite putting out a public plea Monday for more information about the case. www.wfmz.com/news/news-regional-berks/Local/reading-police-id-jose-espinozadiaz-as-suspect-in-deadly-stabbing-of-wilberto-rojas/21125364www.readingpa.gov/content/jose-espinoza-diazUPDATE: As of July 28th, 2018, Espinoza-Diaz is still on the Reading (PA) website as one of the city's most wanted fugitives: www.readingpa.gov/content/jose-espinoza-diazAdmin Note: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

Thoughts? It should be noted Espinoza-Diaz is currently listed as #1 Most Wanted fugitive in Berks County. Recently caught US Marshals Top 15-er Miguel Torres was also once one of their most wanted. I thought I found this first forum case of the new year on my own and then when doing further research learned HeadMarshal had already listed this on our site as a potential Hunt case. Of course, the one problem with airing Espinoza-Diaz is giving the public a reason to care and police have yet to release a motive. I really felt like highlighting that last article's sentence in bold since I have this seen this happen too often. In fairness, I have often had to confirm cases and information, mainly for a somewhat unrelated side project, and on very rare occasions for this site (I can usually find warrants to confirm our cases are still active), and the majority of police departments have been helpful, about 95%. About 3-4 percent are matter of fact but not rude that they can't give out information, and about 1 percent act like I just asked for their mother's social security number but all in all I'd say 95 percent is a good percentage. So while I've had better luck, it is frustrating though that in articles at least I have it seen happen too often they won't release a motive. Why? I'm not sure how that would necessarily interfere with catching someone. What I do know is Espinoza-Diaz stabbed a 15-year old that did not deserve to die. Allegedly wildly stabbing a teen in front of other teenagers proves what a dangerous man Espinoza-Diaz is and why he needs to be arrested immediately. So let's help Berks County out and get this guy just like we got Miguel Torres!

Also, can someone please explain why Espinoza-Diaz was found lying on the grass but not taken into custody? Was it not yet known he was the suspected stabber?

This has been brought up numerous times in regards to other cases, but perhaps if Wilberto Rojas was white, then people would give this case more attention. The media claims to hate the murders of children, but these types of cases get mainly ignored. Rojas has been confirmed to be a completely innocent victim, with a facebook page in his memory, so he, his family and friends deserve Final Justice.

Even if Rojas wasn't innocent and was a youth involved in trouble, he was only 15. It's still young enough to turn one's life around. What makes this case even more tragic is he WASN'T one of those youths that needed guidance, but rather someone in the "wrong place at the wrong time." I actually hate that phrase since hanging out with your friends on a street is not the wrong place to be but it's the cliche saying most reading would understand.
It is rather amazing that Facebook page has over 4,000 likes but this case has still not captured the attention of the media outside of Berks County.

As of today, Dec 11, 2020, Jose Espinoza-Diaz is still listed on the City of Reading's Most Wanted website as a wanted fugitive.
No UFAP-type warrant was found for Jose in PACER for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania however.

Espinoza-Diaz is our fugitive of the day for today. Very surprised how quiet this case has gone since over a decade ago.
