When it comes to chasing fugitives, who often have a violent criminal history or the one crime they committed was of a very violent nature, many times it will end in death. Many would rather die than end up in jail. Others just die for various reasons. So while every year at least a few fugitives die- I feel like 2014 set a record for notable fugitive deaths.
This is not a vigilante forum, we sleuth cases shown on AMW, The Hunt, and other shows and provide phone numbers for tipsters to help catch these fugitives. The objective is to hope these guys/girls are caught alive to face justice. Admittedly, when fugitive deaths happen, it also means the victims don't have to go through a long, agonizing trial, and taxpayer money isn't wasted. So while I can't say I feel bad when a fugitive dies, it is a hopefully last-case scenario in most cases. (If police are being shot at, obviously they have to shoot back.)
But is it just me or has this been the deadliest year on record in regards to fugitive chases?
At the beginning of the year, in a sign of things to come, we found out Dennis Lilly passed away two years ago due to pancreatic cancer, and not to brag, it got our coverage of his case into worldwide media. But it was just a sign of things to come. You know how they have a tribute to dead celebrities at the end of the year? This is sort of the opposite of that where we list the dead fugitives. So aside from Lilly, there were:
Elizabeth Barrer- a web-exclusive drug "queen"-pin that likely would have been aired on AMW's second season on Lifetime had it not been cancelled Some deaths are unsurprising but this one in my opinion was a bit more of a shocker because she was a relatively young woman. Yes she was allegedly involved a dangerous drug trade but it was seemingly random. I don't condone her murder and think it should be investigated.
Charles Mozdir- Obviously the most talked about fugitive death of the year being The Hunt's first capture. Mozdir's profile gave off the impression he wasn't going to be taken alive. But no one expected a shootout in broad daylight in New York City. It was almost like a statement as to why a show like AMW/The Hunt is needed- it proved how dangerous these fugitives are.
Shane Miller- Not entirely surprising but the Hunt's first ever case turned out to also result in death when Miller's body was discovered in Petrolia, California in an apparent suicide. Not a direct result of The Hunt, but still a relieving feeling to know he was gone.
Lovekesh Kumar- Killed his wife and mother in law and on the run for a decade and killed himself in his prison cell in the United Kingdom before he could be brought to the U.S. to face justice.
Kevin Stoeser- This was one of the more unexpected deaths of the year as it would soon turn out the first three cases ever aired on The Hunt would all end in death. A dog found Stoeser's skull and brought it home to his owner. His cause of death is unknown, but it is speculated he could have drowned in a flood that happened at the same time as his escape from a halfway house.
Janet Barreto- Although not entirely unsurprising Barreto died because of her diabetic condition and said poor health, it still capped off a deadly year for fugitives, especially those on the US Marshals Top 15 list, as even after capture there was still a death. So whether it was before capture like Mozdir, or after capture like her, a lot of fugitives died in a variety of ways.
And of course, albeit mostly breaking news fugitives, a lot of non-AMW/Hunt fugitives profiled on our site wound up dead as well, especially towards the end of the year: Marcus Delgado, Sean Petrozzino, Jody Hunt, Christopher Doss, Bradley Stone.
Perhaps also surprising in a violent year for fugitive deaths was who DIDN'T die. Eric Frein wanted in the ambush of two state troopers and seemingly bent on declaring war against authorities was actually captured alive. An exhumed body of an Alabama man killed in a hit-and-run in the early 1980's turned out not to be William Bradford Bishop. If I were to tell you before the Hunt's first season, Charles Mozdir and Kevin Stoeser would wind up dead while William Bishop would possibly still be alive you might not have believed me.
Thoughts? Is it just me or was this the year with the most amount of deadly conclusions in fugitive chases in quite some time?
2015 will hopefully have a lot of great captures. Perhaps it will be a more dramatic year in terms of WHO gets captured, but it will be hard for 2015 to top 2014 in how dramatic the captures end.
