Laura Ayala has been missing from Houston, Texas since March 10th, 2002. She was first aired on AMW on March 16th, 2002 as a breaking news case.
The following is a brief description of the case from Missing Children wiki:
Thirteen-year-old Laura was last seen leaving her home in Houston, Texas on March 10, 2002 to go to the Conoco Gas Station to purchase a newspaper for her spring break school project.
After several minutes had passed, Laura's mother went to the gas station where she was told that Laura purchased the newspaper and left alone. Laura's sandals and newspaper were later discovered in a parking lot.
In February of 2003, drops of blood located in a SUV belonging to the father of a man arrested with two others for six murders were determined to match Laura's DNA. The suspects were very uncooperative when questioned about her case.
Foul play is suspected in Laura's case and investigators believe that she was abducted by an unknown person.
Laura was last seen wearing a blue & white checkered dress at the time of her disappearance. She wore braces and has pierced ears. She speaks fluent Spanish and English. She has a scar on her right upper arm.
She is described as having a shy, reserved nature and very organized. She enjoys journal-keeping and records her activities. Her favorite color is maroon and her favorite number is one.
And here is a more detailed description of the father and three men who have been the most talked about in that case:
In February 2003, Laura's disappearance was linked to three men: Walter Alexander Sorto, 25; Edgardo Rafael Cubas, 24; and Eduardo Navarro, 16. Police say Sorto and Cubas went on a crime spree of robberies, rapes and murders in the predominantly Hispanic east side of Houston. Navarro is charged with driving the getaway car.
Blood found in a SUV belonging to Cubas's father was linked to Laura's DNA. Cubas admitted that he, Sorto, and Navarro occasionally borrowed the vehicle. Semen matching one of the suspects was also located in the car. Police, however, say there is insufficient evidence to file charges in Laura's case as of yet. Cubas and Sorto are already charged with capital murder in the deaths of two adult waitresses and a fifteen-year-old girl. Navarro faces the same charges but cannot face the death penalty due to his youth. The trio has been linked to six homicides, but has been charged in only three of them.
Thoughts? The Charley Project website link below talks about other suspects and also a potential witness in the case but obviously the trio of Sorto, Cubas and Navarro makes the most sense. Sadly this seems similar to the Adam Walsh case in that everyone pretty much knew who the most likely suspect was- but there wasn't enough evidence to entirely close the case until 12 years after Ottis Toole's death. And even worse in this case is Laura hasn't been found dead or alive- leading to the agony of not knowing- which John Walsh has described as being even worse than knowing a tragic outcome which at least provides some closure. I hope investigators can one day piece together enough evidence to finally close this close.
