Alleged career con artist Leonard Ramey will be the last fugitive I profile from the crime-series American Greed: The Fugitives (everyone else is either not confirmed as active, captured and/or in countries where they likely won't be extradited), or at least until the show starts making new episodes. Below is my summary of the episode's recap of Ramey's alleged crimes(this might be long as even though it was one of two segments, it was very well-detailed):
The show starts in early 2002 when an airline Pilot named Mike Tamm calls a man named Ken Walden's wife. Walden had invested Timm's money and he needs documents for his 1099 form. Walden's wife says he has disappeared and thinks he might be dead.
As for who this Walden is- he arrives in Clackamas County- a quiet area south of Portland, Oregon around 1998. He claims to be an attorney from Los Angeles who made money in the stock market and came up to live a "gentleman's life." Walden becomes the owner of a feed store- which is a store that sells livestock for larger animals like horses and dogs.
Mike's son Justin gets a job at the food store at age thirteen. Justin is dyslexic and Walden helps.
Meanwhile, Walden claims to invest in Intel stock. In 2001, he says he will start his own investment firm- Walden- Emery & Associates. Justin puts in $5,000 and sees returns of more than $100,000. Justin's father Michael is intrigued and puts in more than $80,000.
Walden sends letters explaining market predictions and he seems to be right all the time. The statements are on typewriters but Michael Timm passes it off as a Walden eccentricity. Any suspicions he has are also alleviated when he asks Walden for $30,000 to buy a car and he's written a check.
Walden gets investment from many people including customers at a feed store and even the waitress from the diner he frequents for breakfast. (He likes a large orange juice with Mexican skillet, no meat, real butter on his pancakes and ice cold milk.)
Of course it turns out the money Walden gives out is merely other investors money.
That's when Mike Timm calls Walden's wife and finds out he "went to California to meet with investors" and thinks he's dead.
That's when Timm's drives to Walden's wife's house (where she lives with her and Ramey's 8-year old son) and she hands him over a bunch of papers. Timm discovers Walden has invested only $90,000 in the last few months. The reason for his "accurate" stock? A 900 number that gives out trading info on what the stock market had already done.
Then Timm obtains an e-mail from Walden's sister learning his real name- Leonard Weston Ramey Jr. and his aliases.
What he and others learn about Ramey is that he was born in 1946 in Pennsylvania- the son of a successful surgeon. Bright and well-educated, he's elected student President at his religious college. According to a Detective on the show, Ramey "had a golden opportunity to succeed, but didn't take advantage"- instead he took advantage of people.
In 1986 Ramey disappears after taking about $350,000 from close friends, $10,000 from his own mother and other money from a Las Vegas gamgling syndicate. This would be the first time death rumors would spur- and his family even held a memorial for him.
But in 1987, the "dead" Ramey would show up in Tacoma, Washington and befriend Atheltic Club owner Joe McGivne, who like many others invests and has his money stolen by Ramey. Pulling his tricks his usual with McGivney is the first time Ramey would be charged with a crime as Pierce County issued an arrest warrant for securities fraud and theft in 1989. In 2002, Ramey is indicted on more than 60 counts of white-collar related crimes in Clackamas County, Oregon.
The last physical sighting of Ramey comes shortly afterwards when his nephew spots him in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. It would be revealed in 2005 Ramey sent a love letter to his partner from Oakland- he says he's lonely and it mentions he now has a dog. Shortly after that, Ramey is believed to have made a phone call from the campus of UC-Berkeley but hasn't been seen or heard from since.
But besides being a creature of habit as far as his breakfasts go- the best way to identify them may be his smell- as many interviewed on the show says Ramey at times has a strange body odor. Even the officer who drove Ramey's abandoned car back from an airport had to have the windows open. So if there's a man who tries to get you to invest and something doesn't smell right- call the authorities right away.
Thoughts? Although Ramey is no longer on the FBI's website, he is still listed on the Clackamas County's Most Wanted page with recent cases such as Dirck White which is why I felt ok posting it as it seems he's still active with them at least. It's pretty rotten when you steal not only your mother's money but abandon your 8-year old son to avoid going to jail. Ramey seems to mainly follow a pattern- Southern California- Northwest- Southern California- Northwest, so is he likely in the vicinity.
Oh one more thing on the show, when the terrorist attacks of 9/11 happened and the waitress mentioned to Ramey that she hopes they catch the people who did it- his reply was "the police and FBI are stupid and never catch anybody." Former AMW fugitive Michael Alfonso thought something similar and still got caught, so let's prove Ramey wrong and bring him to justice as well.
