QUINCY, Calif. —
The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office said a man considered to be violent and dangerous escaped the county jail Friday during a recreation period.
Caleb Duerr, 39, escaped the Plumas County Jail in Quincy around 8 a.m. by breaching a chain-link fence and was initially spotted close to the nearby O’Reilly Auto Parts store, according to the sheriff’s office.
That prompted a lockdown of schools in Quincy. The Plumas Unified School District said the lockdown was lifted after a report that Duerr had left the area.
The sheriff's office said Duerr was last seen at 9 a.m. walking southbound on County Road A23 from Highway 70 in Beckwourth.
Deputy Sheriff Chandler Peay said no staff was injured during the escape.
Duerr had been at the jail since being booked on May 24 on domestic violence, sexual assault and criminal threat-related charges, Peay said.
The sheriff’s office requested a multiagency response to the escape and has received assistance from the California Highway Patrol, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Division, and K9 units from the Sierra, Butte and Yuba County sheriff's offices.
Duerr is described as 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighing 165 pounds and with brown hair and blue eyes. He is believed to have changed his clothing.
"It’s important to note that, although a new correctional facility has been constructed, no inmates have yet been relocated to the new facility. This escape took place in the old jail," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The sheriff's office's statement also explained why it took nearly an hour before alerting the community to the escape.
It said: "Regarding the use of the Genasys Emergency Alert System, it is important to recognize the extraordinary efforts of our sole on-duty dispatcher at the time of the incident. In addition to managing routine calls, the dispatcher worked tirelessly to mobilize resources, notify neighboring agencies, and coordinate responding units.
"The emergency alert was sent out in just under an hour after the escape was confirmed, following the arrival of additional dispatch personnel. While we understand that an earlier alert would have been ideal, our team worked efficiently under the circumstances to ensure public safety and situational awareness."
