From cbs17.com:
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A loyal friend, kind person, and someone who cared for others is how Leanna Carter described her sister, Sky Rusciano.
Carter said the 46-year-old, who lived in Mebane, was a labor and delivery nurse at Duke Regional Hospital and a nurse specialist for the Durham County Department of Public Health. “I think it gave her a purpose,” Carter said. “I think it gave her the ability to know that she was working beyond on herself. She had strong faith, she was very loyal and dedicated to helping people.”
Carter, who lives in Whitsett with her children and husband Anthony, said the family felt their world crashing on Friday, Sept. 13. “This is my worst nightmare, and I’m living it right now,” she said.
Carter said her sister was killed in a hit and run while driving from Wilson to Mebane that Friday night. Rusciano was on a motorcycle headed westbound near Page Road Extension in Durham County when it happened.
Shortly after 11 p.m., troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said an unknown white pickup truck first struck Rusciano causing her to lose control. After laying the bike down, investigators said Rusciano was then hit and killed by an oncoming van. Officials said they’ve been searching for the driver of the white pickup, who they said never stopped. They believe the front right portion of the vehicle may have damage.
Carter said Rusciano had a close friend who was following behind when the accident happened. They believe the accident happened when Rusciano tried to merge into another lane. “He held her until the paramedics made him move, then apparently worked to resuscitate her for five minutes or longer,” Carter explained. She said Rusciano died shortly after.
“She would have never left someone on the side of the road,” said Carter with tears in her eyes. Carter said she and her family are still trying to understand why the driver didn’t stop. “The simple act of stopping and putting a flasher on… I’m not a vengeful person, I want justice. I want my sister’s life to be given the value that it deserved.”
The family said they plan to hold a celebration of life on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the Blackwell Funeral Home in Burlington.
Carter said close friends have stepped in to share support and help spread awareness on social media. The family is hopeful that a witness may have more information or a business in the area may have surveillance video of the incident.
If anyone has information, NCSHP asks they reach out to the agency by dialing *HP(47) or by contacting the State Highway Patrol’s Durham County office at 919-560-6868 during normal business hours.
