GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. —
Investigators at the Greenville County Sheriff's Office canvassed parts of the Piedmont area to find more information and leads on an unsolved homicide case from 2023.
The body of 57-year-old Janet Abrilz, nicknamed "Shorty," was found in August 2023 near a walking trail at Lakeside Park in Greenville County.
"We just don't have a lot of information, not a lot of evidence at hand, and we don't know a lot," Lt. Ryan Flood said. "We don't know if she was killed there or killed somewhere else, and so we're just designating [Friday] as Shorty Day and hope that we can try to get some little bit of information."
Flood said Abrilz's case remains the only unsolved homicide case in the sheriff's office within the past two years. Investigators added that her body lay at the park for several days before being found.
"Her death was ruled to be caused from blunt force trauma," Flood said. "Again, a very disturbing incident that our investigators are trying to look into."
He said dozens of investigators passed out fliers on Friday in an effort to find out more about who may have killed her.
"It really takes a community to resolve some of these cases, and we hope that by going out there, going face-to-face, we can encourage people to come forward with information," Flood said.
Investigators said they hope more information could soon surface to give Abrilz's family closure.
"This one unsolved case is really weighing heavy, and they really want to try to bring some resolve to her family and hope that they can generate some leads from this activity," Flood said.
Investigators are asking anyone with any information surrounding Abrilz's death to call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME or the sheriff's office non-emergency number at 864-271-5210.
Flood said a cash reward may be available through Crime Stoppers for any information that leads to an arrest.
