Daniel Rubio Mendez has been wanted by the Dallas, Texas Police Department for 25 years. I believe he was only a web-exclusive case on AMW, however, it was a "My Story" (where the victim who wrote to AMW tells part of the story). Below is the My Story feature from the archive:
My Story - By Ida Miramontez
I am writing to tell you about my sister, Delores Miramontez and her horrible death on May 10, 1990. I know there is more to her story than I will ever know but justice has not been on my family's side or her children for over 14 years.
Delores Miramontez was a 1970's hippie with a free spirit. She left home at age 15 and went to Mexico where she met and married Daniel Mendez. When they broke up five years later she returned to her home town of Mineral Wells, Texas. She later remarried, but that marriage went sour too and in 1989 Delores settled in Dallas. She took a job as a seamstress for a clothing manufacturer and was finally settling down.
According to Delores' sister, Ida, after Delores moved to Dallas, Mendez showed up in Mineral Wells and boldly announced to Delores' parents that he intended to kill her. Delores' mom called to warn her, but this wasn't news to Delores. She had heard Mendez's threats before.
Woman Shot While Riding In Car Pool
According to police, on May 10, 1990, as Delores was riding home from work with her car pool, Mendez pulled along side and shot several rounds into the car. She suffered gun shot wounds to her chest and arm. She was taken to Parkland Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police say Mendez's vehicle was recovered at the crime scene, but he fled and hasn't been seen since. Cops believe he is from Acapulco, Mexico and think he may have gone there to hide out.
Delores Would Be Proud Of Her Kids
On the day Delores was killed, Ida was home, suffering from a migraine headache. While she was resting, she had fallen asleep and dreamt someone was shooting her. Later that night, her mom called to give her the bad news about Delores.
My sister was only 34 years old when she died leaving her children behind without anyone but my parents to care for them.If my sister were alive today she could spend time with her grandchildren that she has now. She would be proud of her daughters who have worked hard and are doing well for themselves.
Thoughts? If still alive, Mendez would be in his mid-late 70's. However, there is nothing to indicate he isn't alive. I am sure Delores's family would like to find out what happened to Mendez one way or the other and have some sort of resolution (I never say closure, but justice or resolution) to this case.
