In 2009 (and possibly before?), AMW profiled the biggest art heist in U.S. history at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Mass. The 23-year anniversary of the heist happened on March 18th of this year.

The following is a wikipedia description of the heist:
"In the early morning hours of March 18, 1990—as the city was preoccupied with Saint Patrick's Day celebrations—a pair of thieves disguised as Boston police officers gained entry to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole thirteen works of art."
Of course, they soon tied up the guard and announced it was a robbery. Among the items stolen were works from Rembrandt and Monet.
Anyway, there is a stunning development in this case. The FBI has stated it has identified the thieves in this case. They believe they are members of a North-Atlantic criminal orginization and the paintings were transported to Connecticut and the Philadelphia region.
Another interesting note in the article below is the FBI is still trying to locate the paintings and offering a 5 million dollar reward, but that the statue of limitations has run out for the people who actually robbed the museum. However the attorney quoted in the article has stated there could be charges for posessing the stolen paintings, thereby encouraging some people to cooperate with the promise of immunity.

I was watching Anderson Cooper's report on this on CNN last night and he mentioned Whitey Bulger was long rumored to possibly be involved in the heist. So it's interesting that there is a mob connection here. However, a reporter with the Boston Globe, who knew Whitey's second in command, debunked that theory when interviewed about the new development:

Admin Note #1: The FBI has now identified two suspects in this case who are now deceased. However, the mystery of what happened to the missing artwork remains. Anyone with information about the artwork can contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL FBI or the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum directly or through a third party. Tips may also be submitted online at tips.fbi.gov, the FBI said. There is a 5 million dollar reward for the recovery of the artwork.
