The case of the unknown Susan Perkins killer was a web-exclusive on AMW's old website. Below is the archived description:
Helping A Friend Turns Deadly
On August 31, 2004 Susan J. Perkins was helping her friend Robin at a day spa in Altamonte Springs, Florida. At 8:30pm, Robin heard Susan call her name and she went out to check. What Robin found was shocking: a man with a ski mask was pointing a rifle at Susan's head.
The Escape
Cops say the gunman wearing a ski mask demanded money, and Susan gave him cash, but that wasn't enough for him. He forced both women into the trunk of Susan's 2001 red Ford Focus. At the Washington Mutual Bank on State Road 436 he withdrew $300 from Robin's account and $180 from Susan's.
Then the gunman started driving east. The women knew they had to get out, and fast. While the car was in motion, Susan sprang the trunk release button and frantically started waving her hands. But no one noticed the women. So Robin and Susan decided to escape.
Robin jumped first; she was able to roll to safety, and she ran to a nearby business. But Susan was not as lucky. Cops say when Susan hit the ground, she knocked her head against the pavement and suffered severe trauma.
A Murder Mystery Remains
Susan Perkins died the next day at 2pm in the Orlando Regional Medical Center. She was a registered organ donor, and her liver and kidneys are helping others today. Susan is survived by two sons, ages 15 and 11.
Cops issued a description of the man, but it is very vague. The Altamonte Spring Police Department has no answers. The identity of the robber/murderer remains a mystery.
Thoughts? I might be stating the obvious, but just in case anyone wonders, the reason this is considered a murder because Susan was trying to escape during a felony- being robbed/held against her will. So whether the robber's ultimate plan was just to get more money from them- he is responsible for Susan's death because it happened as a result of his crime.
There is unfortunately not many clues. The robber was wearing a ski mask. According to Robin Barber (the woman who escaped), who was interviewed in a later article, the man may have been in the military (Barber herself was in the Marines). Barber thinks this is the case because the man was very direct and clear in what he wanted, and laced his sentences with the same expletive her fellow Marines used, but didn't use any other vulgar language.
A few more physical characteristics: The suspect was black, with a medium build. He was described by Barber as being in his early 20s and 5 feet, 7 inches to 6 feet tall. He was wearing a mask and a long-sleeve jacket that resembled a military type jacket. The suspect may have smelled of motor oil.
