Slick And Sick
Some fugitives are slippery; others are just plain sick. U.S Marshals say Jose Lopez is both.
Lopez first became a fugitive in 1996. According to authorities, Lopez had been trafficking large amounts of cocaine in and around Hillsborough County, Florida. Police spent extensive time and resources trying to find Lopez, but he managed to keep himself hidden, and did not spend any time in jail.
Almost a decade later, in October 2005, Jose Lopez once again gained the attention of law enforcement. This time it was police in Suffolk County, N.Y. who wanted to track Lopez down, after he was accused of a disgusting crime: sexually assaulting a child. They quickly learned about the charges against Lopez in Florida, and became even more determined to find him.
From Handyman To Fugitive
Unfortunately, investigators have exhausted all of their leads, and come up with no information about Lopez's whereabouts. But they remain hopeful that somebody will be able to shed some light on this investigation.
Lopez has ties to the communities of Huntington and Brentwood in N.Y., Elizabeth, N.J., North Carolina, and Tampa, Fla. Lopez has been known to work as a handyman in the past, and police think that he is probably supporting himself by working odd jobs in different communities.
Thoughts? The above is from the AMW archives. This case was aired on the March 10th, 2007 episode of America's Most Wanted. Even though Lopez is from Ecuador, he remained in the states as a fugitive for at least nearly a decade, so it wouldn't surprise me if he was still on the East Coast somewhere.
