Convicted Killer On The Loose In Texas
Authorities in Texas are on a manhunt for two dangerous criminals: Jose Bustos-Diaz and Octavio Ramos Lopez. They say the two men escaped from a Dilley, Texas, prison on April 6, 2010.
“They escaped sometime between 5:20 and 8:10 in the morning,” said Terry Cobbs of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. “Reports indicate that they were seen around 8:45 a.m. in a white pickup truck along a county road, but we have no confirmation of that.”
Cobbs goes on to tell AMW that the two inmates had been working in the prison’s furniture factory when they escaped – and that every indication points to a planned escape.
“They went through an industrial fan and had bent one of the blades back,” Cobbs said. “They apparently had a tool because they then cut a hole in the perimeter fence and haven’t been seen since.”
Authorities say Lopez was serving a 20-year sentence for two counts of aggravated kidnapping, possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) and possession with intent to deliver. They say the Mexican national is a self-professed member of the dangerous Zeta drug cartel.
“We’re trying to locate some people who are close to Lopez to see what we can squeeze out of them,” added Cobbs.
Officials say Bustos-Diaz is their main concern though. The violent inmate – also from Mexico – was serving a 35-year sentence for murder when he broke free.
“There are no other clues, signs or sightings – anybody that is claiming any knowledge right now of their location,” said Cobbs. “It’s like we’re stuck in the mud and at the mercy of the border.”
Authorities say the prison is just 83 miles from the Nuevo Laredo point of entry. They say by the time prison guards realized the pair was missing, they could have already crossed the border into Mexico.
“Unfortunately there are no southbound checkpoints into Mexico, and it’s a misnomer that you can basically shut down the board,” Cobbs said. “Bustos-Diaz is from the state of Guerrero in Mexico, while Lopez has ties to the McAllen, Texas, and Reynosa, Mexico area.”
Now, authorities in Texas need your tips to track these two dangerous escapees down and put them back behind bars.

Bustos-Diaz is described as a light-skinned Hispanic standing at 5 feet 8 inches tall. Police say he weighs in around 195 pounds and has brown eyes. They say the convicted murderer also has a shaved head with acne scars covering his entire face.
Officials say Bustos-Diaz is no stranger to the tattoo parlor and has several: a heart with a cross tattooed on the webbing of his left hand; the name “Vanessa” with a dot on his left wrist; and the name “Lizeth” on the inside of his right wrist.
Cops say 27-year-old Octavio Ramos Lopez stands at 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs around 170 pounds. They say he has brown eyes and a shaved head. They say the convicted drug dealer has a scar on his right eyebrow and another on the front of his right knee.
Authorities tell AMW that Lopez has two tattoos: one of a cross in the center of his upper back and another of two crossed rifles on the right side of his chest.
Authorities think the dangerous pair could be anywhere by now, but they’re focusing their search on South Texas and northern Mexico.
“There are lots of questions to be answered right now,” Cobbs said. “If they made it to Nuevo Laredo, they could just zip right on across the border.”
Thoughts? The above was from the AMW archives. Bustos-Diaz was a web-exclusive case on the site. The good news is his fellow escapee, Oscar Ramos Lopez, would be caught a few months later in McAllen, Texas. As an added bonus, authorities seized 68 kilograms of cocaine. However, Bustos-Diaz, described as authorities main concern remains at large. While I wish there was more description of the murder itself, I can't help but wonder if Bustos-Diaz got into drug trafficking himself if he did cross the border into Mexico.
