Lazaro Cuatenango, aired on the January 20th, 2007 episode of America's Most Wanted, is wanted for a particularly callous crime. He allegedly murdered his sleep-in girlfriend, in front of her children- all because she wouldn't sleep in his bed. Unfortunately, the full archive no longer works but I was able to retrieve a partial archived description from inarchive.com:
"Augustina lived in what was clearly a full house sharing the space with her two children and one of Cuatenango's kids too. Along with the five of them half of the home was rented out to another woman and her two kids. On May 22nd, 2003 police say the renter's 15 year old daughter saw Cuatenango remove a handgun from a hiding place in the bathroom. Around 11:30pm cops say Cuatenango went into the room where Augustina was sleeping on the floor and yelled at her to get in his bed instead. When she refused investigators say he pulled out the revolver and without warning shot Augustina five times. She died instantly. At the time of the murder Augustina's 15 year old son and 11 year old son were lying in their beds witnesses to their own mother's murder.
Investigators say the renter and her two kids heard the shots ring out. When Cuatenango left the bedroom and was heading into the living room the woman confronted Cuatenango and asked him in Spanish "Sir what did you do ?." Cops say he told her "I did what I should have done a long time ago". Then Cuatenango held up the gun to the renter's chest and tried to shoot her too. Luckily the revolver was out of bullets and all she heard was "click click click." Cops say Cuatenango's son was asleep in another room and Cuantenango woke him up and told him they had to go. According to police Cuatenango and his son jumped into a 1985 beige Ford Thunderbird with CA plates 4VJJ360. Their car has not been recovered and they haven't been seen since. Cuatenango was a property manager at the complex where he lived and he could have found more of the same kind of work. Investigators believe he is either in California or Mexico and wherever he is they say he loves to drink vodka and tequila."
Thoughts? Unfortunately because the archive full page no longer works I have no idea how old Cuatennago's son was and if he's still missing. I also think the murder happened in 2003, even though the archive said 2006, since the wanted by-line at the end says 2003. I am assuming Cuatenango is still at large since I don't see him in California inmate search, however, if anyone has proof otherwise, please feel free to let us know.
As far as my thoughts- this is a tragic case that I am amazed only aired once on AMW. Jesus "Chuy" Canales was a high-profile case who stabbed his girlfriend with a sword in front of her children. (And he was my #1 fugitive of 2009 as well). Here, we have a guy who shot his girlfriend in front of her children for a ridiculous reason, yet hardly any publicity besides one airing. Those children are likely scarred for life. And the only way to help them heal somewhat, although they'll always remember what happened, is to catch Cuatenango.
