The caae of the unknown Marissa Karp killer has been aired multiple times on AMW. It has been well known both for Marissa's father's tenacity in trying to achieve justice- along with a suspect who was finally named- only to be murdered himself. First, I will post the old AMW archive crime description and then provide the updates:
Teaming Up With AMW For Justice
In a desperate letter to AMW, Gary Karp asked for help in finding his daughter Marissa's killer. On Dec. 6, 2005 --which would've been Marissa's 21st birthday-- AMW helped start the process by attending the unveiling of a billboard announcing a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Marissa's unknown killer. Gary hopes that with the success of other fugitive billboard programs across the country, he can help find justice for his daughter.
Marissa had always wanted to be a teacher. According to her father, Marissa was a normal, happy kid until her mother died in 1996. Marissa had trouble dealing with her grief and began acting out. As time went on, her problems became more severe and she became more and more aggressive and at times was even violent.
Troubled Teen Turns Runaway
In October, 2001, Marissa was placed in a juvenile intervention program run by the Florida Department of Children and Families. After only a few months in the program she ran away. A couple of months later, the DCF helped her move in with a non-relative to get her off the streets. She ran away again in April, but her dad said she still kept in touch with some family members by phone through the beginning of August, 2002. But soon the phone calls stopped.
Teen Found Dead Along Alligator Alley
On August 19, 2002 a local fisherman found the body of a woman stuffed in a plastic bag, floating in the water near the Collier-Broward county line. The woman was later identified as Marissa Karp.
Marissa had been shot to death before being stuffed in the plastic bag and tossed in the alligator-infested water. The fisherman found her body in the L-28 section of the canal at mile marker 52 along I-75. Police have met with her alleged boyfriend on several occasions, but no one has been arrested in connection to her death.
Ok, that was the archive description and here's what happened since then-
-In 2012, a man named Randolph Almanto Coakley, who was already wanted for a double homicide in Sunrise, Florida was named as a person of interest in Marissa's murder. He was aired on the August 31st, 2012 episode of AMW on Lifetime. Police believed Marissa lived with an older group of Bahamians including Coakley. Police did not believe Coakley killed her (but did believe he helped dispose of her body), and had been focused on another man in the house named, Eloyn Devon Ingraham. However, police believed that Coakley could provide valuable information.
-As of 2013, Eloyn Ingraham was being held on murder charges related to a 2006 murder of a Broward Sheriff's Deputy. As far as I know, he hasn't been brought to trial yet.
-Coakley would take all his secrets to his grave, however. In 2013, Coakley, hiding out in the Bahamas, was sitting on a bench when he was suddenly ambushed and shot by an unknown assailant while trying to run away from him. While karma likely got Coakley in the end and no one is likely to shed any tears for him, it unfortunately was a set back to solving Marissa's case since he if he was captured alive, police could have tried to speak to him and coax information out of him.
Thoughts? I know we updated when Coakley was killed but we never had a thread on the Karp case itself. In my opinion, I believe police have an inkling as to who killed or may have killed Marissa but unfortunately currently do not have enough to bring someone to trial. If Coakley had been captured, perhaps he could have talked, said what happened to Marissa in exchange for not facing the death penalty in his other case or some other type of deal. It's one of the rare times that I'm disappointed a fugitive died for that reason.
For what it's worth, I post a photo of Eloyn Ingraham (from the Broward Sheriff's Office website) below to see if it jogs anyone's memory. Almanto Coakley's picture and AMW profile can be found below the admin notes in one of the links below.
