Adam Hammer was featured as a web-exclusive "My Story" case on AMW's old website. The feature highlighted cases sent in by family members. In this case, Adam's mother wrote to AMW about his case. Below is the case summary. I've edited the mother's comments in italics only to not confuse people but her words can be found at the link to the full AMW archive below this post, and we can see how much she wants justice.
He Had A Lot Of Heart
Sophia Fleming wants justice for her son, Adam, who was shot and killed in September 2004.
Like many young men, 17-year-old Adam Hammer loved music and playing football. He even dreamed of walking on to the Oklahoma State University football team when he went to college.
A Close-Knit Family
Adam was very close to his brothers, Danny and Michael, and the three moved into a large five-bedroom house in Germantown, Pa. with inheritance money they received from their father's death.
On September 28, 2004, Adam set out in the rain to satisfy his craving for a cigar. Since he was underage, he grabbed his older brother, Michael's, ID and drove to a convenience store in the pouring rain. As he was paying for the cigar, he realized that he was 25 cents short, but the cashier let it slide since he knew Adam. But Adam insisted on paying and went to his car to look for extra change. When he went to go back inside, he was attacked and shot multiple times, including one fatal shot to the chest.
Grim Realizations
Early the next morning, police went to Adam's house with the grim task of notifying the next of kin. Since Adam had been carrying his brother Michael's ID, the officers mistakenly believed that Michael was the murder victim. So when the real Michael greeted them at the door, police gently broke the news of the murder of Michael Hammer .
Immediately, the real Michael called out to his brothers. Danny was the only one to respond, and at that point, the brothers knew that Adam had been murdered.
Thoughts? What is strange in this case is there seemed to be no talk of Adam having any enemies, yet he was gunned down and shot multiple times, which suggests a personal motive. It could have been something like a dumb argument with someone for all we know, but unfortunately this case doesn't appear to have been solved over a decade later.
Ironically, in January of 2014, a teenager was shot multiple times and wounded at the very same corner where Adam was killed. At the moment, a decade apart, there has been no mentions of the crimes being related.
