Welcome to the Marshals section toptenhunter! LOL.
In all seriousness, I do think you have to consider this if he fled to Brazil. Mila's family are from Brazil, and they'd have no problems turning Hiers in they spotted him. Why would he risk going to a country where albeit it would be a million to one shot, there are people living there who aren't too fond of him?
This is why even though he's an ex-cop and it's become a rather predictable location for fugitives to flee to, Mexico still makes sense to me the more I think about it. Paul Jackson managed to successfully hide out there for 25 years, Randy Yaegar for about 17 years. If Paul Jackson can last 25 years, imagine how long an ex-cop can last in Mexico? All Hiers has to do is find a remote village, blend in, get married, have a family, and his neighbors would never suspect a thing.
The other important thing to note, however, is many think Hiers may have parked his car in Laredo as a ruse, and is really somewhere in the United States.
I still want to be respectful to Scott who is still a forum member. But while I acknowledge Dan Hiers is innocent legally speaking until proven guilty I can't say I agree there's a chance he committed suicide or died right afterwards. Could he have died while on the run? I guess. However, surveillance cameras show him looking not worried hours after Mila's murder. In my personal opinion, Hiers is guilty and planned a run, although I still respect Scott's right to defend his brother and disagree with me and acknowledge my opinion is not an official verdict in the court of the law.
It's a tough case. I really hope one day it can be solved one way or the other.

My apologizes I just saw this and I forgot I posted on the Dan Hiers thread.
Like I do have to admit Mexico seems to be very likely for him to flee because I do agree people won't be fond of him because he killed a Brazilian national and if he's hiding out down there and find out he's a former cop, he'll have organized crime members and even police under their pay to wipe Hiers out since Brazil has corruption in some places, but don't get me wrong Brazil is beautiful but it's not perfect like just like any other country isn't the most perfect.
Mexico on the other hand has is the same way and Hiers can live peacefully in an area where the drug war isn't a problem.
Now his brother Scott is a member of the forum and I would also like to respect his right to defend his brother as well.

How is this guy still on the loose? Very frustrating.

All I can say is obviously he's been putting ex-cop skills to good use so far. It is very frustrating there's been no resolution for over 11 years.

This guy is one of the worst. Being tall, athletic, and blonde you would think it would be harder for him to hide in plain sight.

It is a good point that he should stand out regardless of his former profession. AMW and John Walsh always claimed to receive numerous tips on him, but obviously it hasn't resulted in an arrest yet.

He would certainly stand out in Mexico.

If that report about him being spotted in Colorado Springs in 2012 was accurate, then I think he is still somewhere in the U.S. I don't think he'd stand out in the Northwest in a place like Montana.

The more I think about it, this sounds weird, but what if Hiers abandoning his car was a non-ruse ruse? In other words, he might have figured they'd already think it was a ruse but he still planned on going to Mexico/Latin America anyway, he'd figure out what to do from there, and really didn't care if they found the car or not.
(I hope that made sense).
Really frustrating for everyone involved that there's still no answers after over a dozen years.

Crime Watch Daily reran their segment in Hiers earlier in the week. (Repeat nur figured people could use a refresher if they haven't seen the airing or not in a while): m.youtube.com/watch?v=hwzWGawhOPA

It was mentioned that AMW produced some solid leads on Hiers. Anyone know where these leads pointed to?

Sorry I forgot to reply to this, I don't know if they ever specifically stated where just every time AMW profiled him John Walsh would say they were hot on his trail. I do remember one specific lead of white supremacists possibly helping Hiers hide still in the U.S., but dont know how credible the lead is. (And I am not accusing Hiers of being a white supremacist, only that it was an AMW lead). Hiers was also possibly spotted in Colorado Springs in 2012. www.kktv.com/home/headlines/Americas_Most_Wanted_Fugitove_Spotted_In_Springs_139430233.html

The white supremacists tip has a ring of truth to it, considering the area of the country he's from.

They should stake out retailers of tiki torches and see if Hiers has been buying any.

Bizarre update here- a woman is claiming on social media that Hiers is teaching English in China (well liked by students, tall and handsome etc..), and was a bodyguard for an unnamed star there, recognized him from the U.S. Marshals site and is definitely him- despite this not being officially confirmed, many users of Weibo (which apparently seems to be some sort of blogging/social media site) in China are seemingly convinced this is Hiers and outraged at the unnamed school letting a wanted fugitive become a teacher. English teacher in a foreign country seems to be a common occupation among fugitives and was the occupation of a few AMW fugitive captures in the past, so imo this isn't outside the realm of possibility and I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to actually be true. But for now it's just a potential lead. shanghai.ist/2018/09/10/woman-says-she-recognizes-her-former-english-teacher-in-china-on-us-marshals-most-wanted-list/
