Retired Officer Robbed In Home
A man on his way to a pizzeria in Winter Park, Fla., saw the crime unfold just across the street from the Hungry Howie's back on that November night in 2003. He would later tell police officers what he saw: a black male struggling with a woman at the front door of her second-story apartment just before the two disappeared through the front door. Then police say the man heard two gunshots pierce the tranquility of the night.
With that, the man dashed in to the restaurant and told the staff to call the police immediately. Unfortunately for Cheryn McGillicuddy, a former officer, help would not arrive in time.
Dispatchers received another 911 call within moments of the one dialed in from the eatery, and this one was far more chilling.
"I've been shot," Cheryn screamed over and over in a 911 call moments after the intruder fled. Officers arrived on the scene, but by that point the suspect was long gone. In addition to the gunshot wounds, she had bruises that police say came from the altercation that ensued as she tried to fight the robber off. Cheryn gave police a generic description of the assailant, but she died at the scene.
Cheryn served the community as a officer for 14 years, 12 with the Kennedy Space Center and two with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. She left the force to manage the Central Florida School of Massage Therapy with her husband.
FDLE Searches For A Killer
Investigators in Florida have been relentlessly searching for Cheryn's killer since that night. As the investigation got under way, officers learned that the robber had taken her wallet and other undisclosed items from her home. While they suspect robbery was the motive for this violent crime, authorities are unclear as to whether Cheryn was specifically targeted or happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
"I see no reason to think she was specifically targeted," said Jeff Harris, a detective with the Winter Park Police Department. "We're looking for that one little tip to break this open."
Upon investigating the apartment, inspectors dug up clues, but were left with more questions. Detective Harris found the killer's execution of robbery peculiar: Cheryn's second story apartment -- with its lone stairwell leading from her front door to the ground -- did not provide an ideal get away for a robbery.
Officers discovered the two driver's side doors open on Cheryn's truck. Officers thought perhaps Cheryn, who had just returned from a Thanksgiving weekend with her parents in nearby Mims, Fla., was attacked while unloading the truck upon arrival. The discovery of an unpacked suitcase in the home however, led officers to believe she may have been home and settled for a few hours before the incident.
The biggest clue recovered was ballistic evidence, but officers were unable to recover a murder weapon. But with no name, and more critically, no face, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement needs your help to catch Cheryn's killer.

Thoughts? Officer McGillicuddy's murder was profiled as a web-exclusive case on America's Most Wanted's old website. There are blogs and articles as recently as 2015 saying the case is still unsolved. I would call the Florida Crimeline number in the photo at the top of the post (1-800-423-TIPS) if you have information.
