(Above photo credit: cbs4indy.com) From CBS 4 Indianapolis: INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The family of an Indianapolis man killed outside his apartment is pleading for help solving the case. One year ago today, someone shot and killed Robert Aynes on Indy’s northeast side. No arrests have ever been made. At the time of his death, the victim was likely outside working on his van, as he did quite frequently, because police found the hood had been lifted up. The death took place on a rainy night, November 2, 2017, just across the street from Arlington Middle school. “He was working on his van and someone came up and shot him point blank in the head,” said Steve Aynes. Speaking from his home in Florida, Steve says the motive for the murder of his brother Robert remains unknown. Robert’s wallet and cell phone weren’t stolen from the scene. Unfortunately, police say very few witnesses stepped forward to help solve his case. “It just ticks me off that somebody did this to my brother and they are still out there to do it again and it’s nonsense. It’s utter nonsense,” said Aynes. Robert worked as a mechanic. Having no one arrested for the death for a full year has been devastating for the entire family. “It was just a violent death and it left an emptiness in my heart,” said Aynes. “Today the first thing I wanted to do was call my brother and say, ‘I love you,’ but I can’t do that.” A search of IMPD records from 2017 shows more than 90 of the 177 homicides last year remain unsolved. In every case, someone knows what caused the crime, they just need to speak up. “There are people out there that have seen things. They know things and they don’t want to get involved. That needs to change,” said Aynes. “Indianapolis needs to take their streets back and help the police department.” Anyone with information on the suspect in this case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.cbs4indy.com/2018/11/02/family-of-indy-man-murdered-1-year-ago-waits-for-answers-in-unsolved-murder/amp/Thoughts? To date still nothing more than 2years ago. If someone knows something please say something.. Hi stevea, Welcome to the forum, although I'm sorry for the circumstances and sorry for your loss. I want to stress we're an unofficial fan page but I try to find unsolved cases I find in local area news to highlight for discussion, and your case in particular angered and still angers me because it seems to me that article is implying people may have information, but they aren't coming forward. And I always say, not coming forward makes you just as guilty.

I am Robert’s brother and we are still waiting for answers to who did this to our family... Hi Steve, I had thought you were likely Robert's brother based on the article but didn't want to assume and make an accidental embarrassing mistake. I understand it must be entirely frustrating. To try to get a little more attention, I posted this thread to the In Pursuit: Missing and Wanted group on Facebook. It's currently pending approval but I'll let you know when they approve it. www.facebook.com/groups/missingandwanted/

Hey Steve, That is an excellent and well-done video. I hate to speculate and I say this as someone not in law enforcement but trying to figure your tragedy out or come up with some theories- as to what could have happened, I'm trying to make sense of this, but do you think it was possibly an attempted robbery gone awry? I know nothing was taken but perhaps that's because the attempted robber or robbers had to flee after panic- sorry if this is a rude question, but do you think Robert would have fought back if someone tried to rob him? Or perhaps something causes the attempted robber to panic and pull the trigger such as flinching at a head turn? The only other thing I can think of is some sort of mistaken identity. Perhaps it was someone else at the apartment complex the killer or killers had an issue with and they killed Robert instead after mistaking him until they were up close and too late. I wonder if the police looked into if anyone had a criminal history at the complex. Your brother sounded like a great guy who never had any enemies. It doesn't make any sense why anyone would have any issue, although it is a sad world we live in at times where people feel slighted for the stupidest reasons.

No I do not think he would have fought back my brother was non confrontational. He would have given any potential robber anything he had.

Got it, sorry if it was a rude question, I mean most people would comply in a robbery (if someone even tells me they have a gun I'm not taking any chances even if I don't see one), but sometimes things can still go awry anyway, an accidental pull on the trigger for example, which is the only reason I asked. As far as getting further publicity, some other ideas I have unfortunately I don't think they've done a case in a while but in the past, Unsolved Mysteries even during cancellation years has posted youtube videos from user submissions. They're supposedly coming back on Netflix soon, but with only one case an episode and limited episodes. This would be right up your alley if they still do user youtube videos although I'm not sure they do anymore. unsolved.com/tips/"Fugitive Watch" on Facebook will also do unsolved cases. And perhaps finding if there's a way to contact the newsmagazine shows such as Dateline NBC and 20/20. Also, perhaps there's a true crime podcast out there that could take on Robert's case- True Crime Daily and The Murder Squad are two off the top off my head that sometimes focus a podcast on an unsolved case.

For what it's worth, every Sunday I select a fugitive and/or case of the week to highlight on the forum for seven days. I've put Robert's case on the front page for this week (May 3rd- May 9th, 2020) and hopefully this thread will get some additional views now.

I wanted to say that I have read over this thread as well and I'm very sorry to stevea for the loss of his brother Robert. To add to Scumhunter's suggestions for case publicity, I would also highly suggest Project: Cold Case. Robert's murder is in their database because of a partnership project they did with The Washington Post but I don't believe his case has been officially submitted to them yet. If not, then I'll include the link to their Facebook page and their website on how to reach out to them. www.projectcoldcase.org/case-submission/www.facebook.com/Projectcoldcase/Hopefully the publicity can reach the right person to solve Robert's murder.
