Melvatean Lampkins has been wanted for 35 years on escape charges where she was originally in prison for murder.
In 1968 when Melvatean was 18, she took part in a grocery store robbery in Milwaukee along with her brother James Lampkins and James Samuel Cook. Melvatean was the lookout for the robbery. James Lampkins shot and wounded a produce manager before he opened the safe. James Samuel Cook clubbed two customers with the butt of a gun when 78-year old John Adornato walked in. Adornato who spoke little english, may have not understood Cook telling him to move aside, so when Adornato didn't move, Cook shot him to death. That night the robbers were all arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment plus 60 years. James Lampkins was released from prison in 1985, by then he was on a work release assignment at an engineering school. In 1975, Melvatean's sentence was commuted to 50 years and she was allowed to take University classes. In 1979, she walked away from those classes and hasn't been seen since, becoming a fugitive. She had previously escaped in 1976.
Thoughts? What I find interesting about this case is that if Melvatean didn't try escaping and continued to take the classes, then she could have been released from prison like her brother. After spending 35 years on the run, I doubt she's stayed in the Milwaukee area all this time, but maybe perhaps a nearby Midwestern state like Illinois, Ohio or Michigan.
