(Above photo credit: Unsolved Mysteries website) Fugitive Profile as of December 10th, 2017: (Based on Unsolved Mysteries website posting) Full Name: Salvatore Michael Caruana Gender: Male DOB: 1935 to 1939 Height: 6’ Weight: 175 lbs. Eyes: Brown Hair: Graying black Defining Characteristics: Scars on back, left cheek, right finger Salvatore Caruana is wanted for drug trafficking and money laundering. He was aired on Unsolved Mysteries, however I don't know if he was ever aired on AMW. Caruana was first arrested in 1954 for armed robbery and got involved in the narcotics business in the 1970s. Caruana would supervise the trafficking of large quantities of marijuana and would make sure it was weighed correctly and that the quality was good. Caruana was arrested in 1983 along with several key associates, he was possession of $40 million dollars worth of marijuana at the time of his arrest. He posted a $500,000 bond and failed to appear for his Apr 2, 1984 trial. An investigation was launched and it was determined that Caruana was a multi-millionaire who was laundering large amounts of money. In 1987, his Massachusetts home was raided and was last tracked three months later to a motel in Connecticut. One month later, his van was found at a truck stop, the van was wiped clean of fingerprints. He hasn't been seen since. Thoughts? Many believe that Caruana is likely dead, especially because he had connections to the mob. If he's still alive, he would be in his mid-to-late-70s, and it's possible he fled the US and lived the good life overseas. I feel there's a good chance that the mob killed him however, considering th unsolvedmysteries.wikia.com/wiki/Salvatore_Caruanaunsolved.com/gallery/salvatore-caruana/Admin Note #1: Since Caruana has been profiled or Unsolved Mysteries, our advice for anyone with tips on his whereabouts would be to go on unsolved.com and click on "TIPS"Admin Note: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

As "uncreative" as I feel it may be to say a fugitive is dead when we discuss whereabouts, I would tend to agree that he may have been done away with considering his mob connections.
It's always possible he eventually passed away from health issues, old age, etc. as well.

I remember reading about this case and for some reason, I kept thinking that if this guy was involved with the New England mob back in the 70's, I wonder if he ever was somehow involved in some way with James "Whitey" Bulger. Just today though, I saw a post on an UM forum that discussed Caruana and quoted this from the Wikipedia page of Richard Castucci, a Mafioso in the New England mob.
"Castucci allegedly murdered a man that he suspected of having an affair with his wife Sandra. From late 1969 to 1970, Castucci suspected that Sandra was dating Salvatore M. Caruana, a prominent drug dealer and made man with the Patriarca crime family. Sandra has to this day denied any such relationship with Caruana. Nevertheless, an enraged Castucci threatened Caruana with physical harm if he did not stay away from Sandra.
However, FBI agent John Connolly, Castucci's handler, confirmed Caruana's affair with Sandra. Caruana disappeared in 1984 and was never heard of again. Caruana's body was never found and no one was ever charged with his murder."
Those familiar with the Bulger case knows that agent Connolly was in league with Bulger and is now serving time for murder. Castucci was also eventually murdered under Bulger's orders after he became an FBI informant.
I always kind of believed that Caruana was dead due to his mob relationships. My main interest was as to whether or not he had ever been involved with Whitey Bulger.

Just in case it appeals to anyone, there is Salvatore Caruana's old FBI wanted poster.

I was watching the Robert Stack Unsolved Mysteries release on Amazon Prime and they claimed Caruana was at that point in time on the U.S. Marshals Top 15 list. However, I can't find anything to back this up or when he was added (and obviously removed).

Thanks so much!
It still only says major cases and makes no mention of him actually being on the top 15 list!

Unsolved Wiki still has Caruana listed as "Results: Wanted" as of this update (7/26/2018). Although I'm not sure if we ever discussed this (theczar references this but this goes into more detail) or if this was just added by them recently but they add some interesting details:
"Results: Wanted. In October 1990, the remains of three men were found buried underneath a garage in Hamden, Connecticut. One body was positively identified as Theodore Berns, while the other two were never identified. However, some sources claimed that Caruana was one of the other victims. Berns was allegedly having an affair with Caruana's wife after Caruana went on the run in 1984. According to mob associate Jack Johns, he, Caruana, William Grasso, and two other mob associates murdered Berns and buried him under the garage in 1986. Before his death in 1989, Grasso told Johns that he had Caruana killed and that Caruana's body was also buried under the garage. However, it is unknown if the remains found under the garage were ever identified as Caruana's. He is still listed as a wanted fugitive."

According to a 2015 filing, the indictments against Caruana were dismissed due to the government believing that Caruana was most likely deceased and had not seen evidence to contrary since his "reported death in 1987." ecf.mad.uscourts.gov/doc1/09517133090
