BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators say John Aguillard was just on his way to work when he was gunned down and killed. Now the search is on for his killer.
The sad fact is it has been for a while. The crime scene is now nearly seven years old. He was murdered back on May 26, 2009 in the 3000 block of Oswego Street, just a couple blocks north of the Louisiana Technical College.
It was 5 a.m. when the 51-year-old was leaving his apartment for the short walk across the parking lot to his truck. It's a walk he never finished. Aguillard died at the scene.
"We have witnesses who said they heard a scuffle, heard four to five shots, but nobody saw anything else," said Detective Chris Polito with the Baton Rouge Police Department.
His family lives in New Orleans and said he only lived in Baton Rouge for about a year. He was living in a part of town that has seen its share of crime.
"We've got crime in this area, but something like this is not something that happens often," Polito said.
So why was he attacked? Was it personal or a crime of opportunity? There is evidence pointing to a robbery, but there are still a lot of questions out there.
"Every indication from neighbors is that he was a good guy," Polito said. "Nobody has been able to shed any light on who may have killed him."
Something that may have contributed to his death was seen all over the area back then. Run down abandoned houses and overgrown lots can be seen all over that part of town, and many neighbors worried they were, and still are, the perfect place for the criminal element to hideout.
In fact, there is a cut-through from some abandoned homes right to where Aguillard's truck was parked. It may have been the perfect place to watch a person over time, get a schedule down and ambush them.
"It's a possibility. We have evidence that leads us to believe that, but we don't have enough to draw that conclusion 100 percent," Polito said.
So many worries, so many questions. What police are hopeful for now is that somebody may be able to cut through the weeds and shed a little light on who killed John Aguillard.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
