That is a great point. I remember the only hope was when AMW got a possible tip on Cofer hiding out in an apartment in Tennessee, and it turned out to be a dead ringer that wasn't Cofer. The man was even interviewed and took it in stride, joking that everyone has a twin.

If this was known for a long time then it's somewhat surprising to see them only announce it to the public now (unless they wanted quality leads on this now second murder investigation from his AMW profiles). Now he's being investigated in two unsolved murders.

Another thought and it's whether Cofer could have remained on the run for 13 years with pretty much no publicized location leads and still likely be in the US. It certainly wouldn't be impossible as we've seen with other fugitives like Morris Jackson.

Unfortunately, he did kill, but not again...before.

David Bert Whetstone, my stepfather and the only father I ever knew was shot in the head and stuffed in the trunk of his car at his home. My youngest sister, who is his only natural born daughter has never been the same since the murder. The news media stated the key to finding his killer may be the gold coins, and that may be true, however, I feel there is more to this than just coins.



Further more, I am terribly saddened that Cofer is no longer on the AMW list. When I found out that Cofer was a suspect in my fathers killing and that he had been on AMW for Mr. Buchanan's murder, I was initially upset that he was removed. This may be just because of timing, I'm not sure, but I think this should be examined again by AMW and Cofer placed back on the list. And as you stated in the quote above about the possibility that he may not be alive anymore, I read somewhere that he is a survivalist and in the areas where he was last seen, it would be easy to hide and forage for years.

My father was brutally murdered, and due to what I will not disclose here, he was very uncomfortable in dark closed-in places. To have his body stuffed into the trunk of a car and slammed shut in the heat of July, there was no way he would have survived and must had died a very lonely, painful, agonizing frightening death. And all I can see are his eyes looking back at me when I was a small child, tenderly telling me that some day, I would grow up to be a sweet young lady. No matter what people may say or think about him, my father was everything to me and today, I still cry when I hear his name. I miss him so much and can't believe someone would kill him over those stupid coins.



If Cofer is the killer, I want him caught and tried for my father's murder. I am not denouncing Mr. Buchanan's murder as his killing was not justified by any means. I truly feel heartbroken for Mr. Buchanan's family and friends and want Cofer to face the pending charges for the murder he committed against Mr. Buchanan. Cofer is a ruthless killer, killing only because he has a hatred for the country he lives in? Makes no sense. But then again, when dealing with a sociopath, nothing ever makes sense. But, Mr. Buchanan was with people when he was killed so it should be easier to convict Cofer on that particular murder because of witnesses. And attention on Mr. Buchanan's murder has been primarily the fact that Cofer and Mr. Buchanan were at odds on 9/11 and the Murrah Bombing, bringing out the fact that Cofer was anti-American and anti-government.

However, my father may have been alone, if Cofer didn't have anyone with him. Which makes this a particularly sad crime if you knew my father. Second, what he did after he killed him was just sickening. Finally, because my father was murdered earlier, his murder should be on the docket and tried before Mr. Buchanan's. And I know there are those who would say, what Cofer did to an American Vietnam Vet was just wrong and should be addressed because he was a vet but what they must realize is that my father also served in the Navy. I just want people to understand that my fathers death merits as much justice as anyone who has been hurt by Cofer or whoever may have been involved in his death, and I will do everything I can to see that his killer('s) are brought to justice for my little sister and his wife as well as myself and my two sisters who were his stepchildren.

This is good information! I wondered about his hair, since in the last photo I have of him, he was going bald. I also wondered about his glasses too. The photo's from the OCPD have him without glasses and the AMW photo a few years later had him with thick glasses. Just didn't make since that he requires glasses just some of the time. I'm working to have a composite drawn of him with and without glasses and with this new information, bald and with a bandanna. Hopefully this will help as my webpage is getting a lot of hits lately. Also, don't know if you already have someone doing sketches for you or not, but I would highly recommend Randall Sands, he's done many fugitive sketches, some for other fugitives on this site, and seems pretty responsive (I didn't know him initially, but he wound up following this site's Twitter and we've had some conversations as well):
